So whilst Metallica have had the utmost joy in becoming the first band in the world to play on all seven continents, The Defiled however have found solace by becoming the first band in the world to perform on an iceberg.
Before we turn our attention to the London industrialists, we at GMA would like to draw your attention to the band Arctic Spirits and their music video "Assiliarsuaq" which can be seen below. Arctic Spirits are one of the first ever metal bands from Greenland, yeah we bet Kerrang! and the like didn't tell you that!
Right well back to The Defiled, so an iceberg was transformed into not quite exactly a 'gig venue' per se, more like the most literal open-air concert you'll ever see and this all took place in the Greenland Sea (all in aid of the Jägermeister Ice Cold Gig, which if you like pits artists under jaw-dropping temperatures i.e. -30*C).
Rocking out in temperatures to a number of locals from nearby Kulusuk (of which is near Kulusuk Airport and features direct flights to Reykjavik in Iceland), all of whom attended the gig in Amon Amarth fashion via standing and watching the band perform from an array of fishing boats and leisure craft.
The Defiled's journey began with flying from London to Reykjavik (Iceland) and then got their connected flight to Kulusuk Airport, where they then traveled across ice and sea to their base on the neighbouring island of Tasiilaq (just over 2000 inhabitants).
Before taking the challenge head on, front-man Stitch D, along with keyboardist The AvD, bassist Vincent Hyde and drummer Needles spent time mingling with local musicians and watching them perform their own traditional music, before inviting them and other residents to come and witness their unique one-off performance. The choice of set? 30 minutes of insane music taken from their latest album "Daggers" (Nuclear Blast)
To thank the locals for making the gig happen, The Defiled donated their equipment to the local community hall, this happened upon hearing that the Kulusuk village music hall, and all of their equipment, had burnt down in a fierce winter storm. The donations included strings from Mapex and Blackstar, a donated drum kit and guitar amp to contribute to the rebuilding of the facilities.
Stitch D admitted that this performance was one of the most insane they have ever done, adding that "you see these things on TV documentaries but it’s not until you get to see them in real life that you realise just how big and amazing icebergs are. Although it was cold, I don’t think any of us noticed once we got started as the stage location literally takes your breath away."
He goes on to further add that:
“As a group of mates we’ve shared some amazing experiences together but this has been an adventure that has bought us closer together and something that we all feel really privileged to have been part of. We’ve made a lot of friends during our short stay here and donated some music equipment to the local people, so we look forward to coming back one day and playing a joint gig out here next time – maybe the first ever gig with two bands playing on two icebergs at the same time!”
In order to capture the gig and the breath-taking surroundings, the expedition team turned to the latest technology to film and photograph the gig – utilizing state-of-the-art ‘octocopter flying drone cameras’ to hover above and alongside the iceberg which are controlled remotely from the flotilla of boats nearby.
Tom Carson, Jägermeister music manager, added:
“As far as stage backdrops go, I don’t think you’ll find anything more impressive than this. We’re used to staging events at music venues and summer festivals, so it made for an interesting change to be checking ‘berg suitability’ as part of the pre-event checks as opposed to the typical band riders and sound systems."
“We’ve worked with The Defiled for a number of years now as part of our Jägermusic programme and we’re extremely grateful to them for accepting the Jägermeister Ice Cold Gig challenge and staging one of the most unique sets we’ve witnessed – we hope the locals of Kulusuk enjoyed it as much as we did.”

Gearing up to open the main stage at this weekend’s Sonisphere festival at Knebworth House (headlined by The Prodigy, Iron Maiden & Metallica), London metallers The Defiled have released the video for their latest single “Infected”.
Featuring stunning 3D animation from the London based Smoke And Guns Productions, the video tells a twisted tale of epidemic infection, while the band rock out in a fire and stripper filled morgue.
Stitch D explains that the band has "done performance videos, we’ve tried our hand at acting, and our last video did not even have us in it", naturally they wanted to do something unique and so what better way to achieve this than by using Lego, as he explains "With animation, anything is possible – if we want a helicopter, no problem, if we want a massive machine gun mounted on a jeep, ditto". Of course he is disappointed that the real thing did not happen, no strippers nor pyrotechnics.
Keyboardist The AvD adds: "Fuck yeah! Suicide, murder, disease, fire, helicopters, machine guns, strippers and lego – this has got it all".
Regarding Aaron Curse's departure (as seen in the video), he admits that the band "are sad to see him go, but you can’t fuck with fate. He is probably down there in hell right now, creeping out Satan and his minions. He will be missed".

Norwegian Gothic metal band Sirenia have signed a record deal with Napalm Records!
The Austrian label is more than excited to welcome back the band on their artist roster:
"Morten is an amazing songwriter and with his band Sirenia they still belong at the top of Gothic Metal. We barely can´t wait to check out the first new songs and to release the new album in early 2015." Says Nadir Amrioui / A&R of Napalm Records.
Morten / Sirenia comments on the signing:
"We are very excited about having signed a new deal with Napalm Records. This is where Sirenia began our career 13 years ago, so it feels like a homecoming in many ways. Looking forward to keep on bringing our music out to all the metalheads around the world together with Napalm. There is much more to come. Cheers!"
Dutch symphonic metallers Epica have launched the first episode of their latest studio documentary. The documentary gives a behind the scenes look at the recording process of the band's sixth studio album, The Quantum Enigma. It also previews the first music from the upcoming album. Check out the clip over on the Nuclear Blast YouTube channel.
The band recorded "The Quantum Enigma" together with upcoming producer Joost van den Broek at the Sandlane Recording Facilities in the Netherlands. The album has been mixed by Jacob Hansen (Volbeat, Hatesphere).
Where the 2013 Retrospect performance reflected on a decade as one of the leading bands in the symphonic metal scene, the upcoming sixth studio album "The Quantum Enigma" marks the beginning of a new Epica: modern, heavy and without compromises.
Guitar player Isaac Delahaye had this to say:
"The whole process of writing and recording TQE was extremely refreshing for us. Instead of preparing the album in our home studios separately, we rehearsed the songs together in the studio. Just like any other band, you could say, but as Epica is located in 3 different countries this is a little more complicated for us. The direct interaction between us has certainly lifted up the quality of the songs, as no detail was left unspoken. Definitely worth taking some time off from touring! As far as songwriting goes, the main focus was groove and melody."
"The Quantum Enigma" will be released on May 2nd (Europe), May 5th (UK) and May 13th (USA) through Nuclear Blast.
Swedish death-glam quartet Deathstars have rescheduled their previously-announced March UK dates for November and also confirmed an additional 3 shows. Lacuna Coil's Cris "Pizza" Migliore and Cristiano "CriZ" Mozzati announce retirement ahead of album release
"Dear friends, It is with a heavy heart that we share this news with you today: our two brothers Cris 'Pizza' Migliore and Cristiano 'CriZ' Mozzati have decided to retire from Lacuna Coil.
Both Pizza and CriZ have had big changes impact their lives recently - we know how stressful and difficult it can be to balance both real life and the life of a professional touring musician, and we have nothing but total respect for their decisions to focus on their families and lives at home.
We have such incredible memories of traveling and exploring the world together with Pizza and CriZ, and we want to wish them both all the best as they begin these exciting new chapters in their lives. We will never forget the important roles they played in this band, or the incredible times we shared together.
THANK YOU PIZZA AND CRIZ! WE LOVE YOU GUYS!!
Cristina, Andrea, Marco, and Maus.
Cris "Pizza" Migliore expresses his thoughts:
“Dear friends, after over 16 years spent with the Lacuna Coil family, I decided to move on and begin a new chapter in my life. This hasn't been an easy decision, as you can imagine, but I felt like I needed to change some things around.
I'm glad and honored that I've had the chance to be able to embark on such an amazing adventure, with such wonderful people as "travel companions"! I will never forget my time in Lacuna Coil and I wish my sister and brothers all the best for whatever the future may bring.
I'm sure you understand! I would also really like to thank every single one of you for showing such amazing love and support for a small band from Milan, Italy, who would've never thought would become what it has during these incredible 16 years. Thank you all and enjoy this last record we did with me and CriZ as part of the line-up - it's some of the best music we've done and I'm sure you'll love it!
Keep on rockin'!!
Cristiano "CriZ" Mozzati adds:
“Hey Coilers, as many of you guys and gals know, during this last year lots of very important things happened in my life - something really amazing, and deep enough to make me sit in front of my laptop to write these bittersweet words...
I'm leaving my "second family" Lacuna Coil because I need this change in my life... this hasn't been an easy decision at all and I've come to it with pain in my heart, because together we laughed and cried; we fought and gave all our lives to this amazing band. Together we lived the dream for 16 wonderful, intense and unforgettable years. All you guys around the world gave me such positive and sincere vibes and emotions that will stay embedded in my heart for the rest of my life! I want to say thank you Coilers, friends, crew, partners, and people that listen to our music for being such an inspiration for me. To my brothers and sis I'd like to say the following: Never stop to kicking asses, you sure know how to!
The new record is the best thing we've done together. I have put all my passion and feelings into it and I'm sure you'll love it. I'll never stop playing drums - as we all know, if you were born with rock inside your veins, you'll die with it... and this is what I will do.
Take care and stay Coilers!

Century Media Records would like to extend a massive thank you to Cris "Pizza" Migliore and Cristiano "CriZ" Mozzati, as they will be missed – “Broken Crown Halo” marks a new chapter in the ever-evolving history of Lacuna Coil, but the band will not be slowing down. In fact, they are currently packing their bags and gear to begin touring.
Lacuna Coil return to the road to introduce North America to 'Broken Crown Halo' as part of the Revolver Hottest Chicks in Hard Rock Tour (http://hottestchickstour.com), which launches February 20 and features Lacuna Coil sharing a stage with Sick Puppies, Century Media Records label mates Eyes Set To Kill, and Cilver. Lacuna Coil are currently working on European summer festivals. UK’s Bloodstock is already confirmed, so keep your eyes peeled for more festivals.
“Broken Crown Halo” is set for releases March 31st, 2014 in Europe, Australia / NZ and April 1st, 2014 in North America on Century Media Records. The album is the band's seventh studio effort, and the highly-anticipated follow-up to 'Dark Adrenaline', which was released in January 2012 and saw the band tour with acts including Paradise Lost, Megadeth, Motorhead, Volbeat, and Sevendust after debuting at No. 15 on the Billboard Top 200 album chart.
Fans can get a taste of 'Broken Crown Halo' in the form of the album track 'Nothing Stands In Our Way', recently released via the Century Media Records Soundcloud page:
Swedish Industrial Gothic / Glam Metal quintet Deathstars are pleased to announce that their much-anticipated new studio album is set for release in February 2014 via Nuclear Blast Records, their first since 2009’s "Night Electric Night". The recordings will take place in Studio Bohus with Roberto Laghi who will co-produce the album together with 'Nightmare Industries'. Cat Casino had left the band for other ventures and naturally "Night Electric Night" is the only album he is featured on, meaning Deathstars have now reverted back to their original four-piece setup.
Lead vocalist Whiplasher Bernadotte shares his thoughts on the forthcoming full-length:
'Deathstars is an adventure for us. It’s as if it is a phenomenon of it’s own, and our forum for destruction, glitter and darkness. We are very excited about the new material and every time we hit the studio we never know what the outcome will be, i mean we have a general idea but we’re never a 100% sure how the final result will be until we’re done and can sit back and listen to it'.
This UK tour will be a showcase of everything Deathstars have achieved as a band so far, and also support their newly released material! Tour dates as follows (Ticket links included):
TUE 25 MARCH - LONDON - THE GARAGE
WED 26 MARCH - MANCHESTER - ACADEMY 3
THU 27 MARCH - WOLVERHAMPTON - SLADE ROOMS
Stay tuned for more info regarding their forthcoming album and supports to be announced soon!
