Denmark's Taphos sets release date for debut album; reveals first tracks, to tour with Degial in May
Blood Harvest Records and Helter Skelter Productions set June 8th as the international release date for Taphos' highly anticipated debut album, Come Ethereal Somberness, on CD and 12" vinyl formats.
Hot on the heels of Blood Harvest's compilation of the band's first two recordings as Demo MMXVI & 7" EP MMXVII, garnering widespread acclaim and heightening anticipation for their first full-length, at last arrives Taphos' Come Ethereal Somberness. As a debut LP, Come Ethereal Somberness does everything it should: stay consistent to a band's sound established on their demos whilst pointing toward new avenues. Here, Taphos do both, and then some.
Hailing from the same Danish scene as Undergang and Phrenelith, Taphos create a classic - and classically gutted - style of Metal of Death. Their first recording, Demo MMXVI, possessed a darkly thrashing sound highly reminiscent of turn-of-the-'90s death metal on both sides of the Atlantic, as resolutely Scandinavian as it was American, its filthy propulsion as palatably fresh as it was authentically ancient. On the subsequent two-song EP, Taphos' sound becomes more world-eating, their songwriting aims more epic whilst not losing the raw fury of their beginnings.
Now, with Come Ethereal Somberness, they synthesize the two stylistic shifts into something both berzerker and epic, manic and finesse in equal measures. Indeed, Taphos are firing on all songwriting cylinders here, as the energy literally bursts off the charts but retains a sense of composure and daresay class rarely scene in full-blooded death metal. Hammering and hideous yet nevertheless invoking a clarity that never castrates their attack, the quartet render each of these seven central compositions (bookended by moody instrumentals) a story unto itself. Hell, the titles themselves tell that story - "Ocular Blackness," "Insidious Gyres," and the equally telltale "Thrive in Upheaval" and "Impending Peril" among them - and that story is horrific.
New nightmares are here, then, and Taphos will be taking them on the road with a full European tour this May alongside Swedish comrades Degial (dates after the jump). Until then, as its title ominously proclaims, Come Ethereal Somberness! Hear two new tracks off the album, the aforementioned "Thrive in Upheaval" and "Impending Peril" HERE at Blood Harvest's Bandcamp. Pre-order info can be found HERE.

Dutch melodic death metal band Purest Of Pain will be the releasing their debut album "Solipsis" on March 1st, 2018 to follow their 2013 single "Momentum" and 2011 EP "Revelations In Obscurity".
Lead by guitarist and main songwriter Merel Bechtold of DELAIN, whom also performs in much respected bands MaYaN and The Gentle Storm / Anneke van Giersbergen, the energetic quintet from Holland, which now includes Delain drummer Joey de Boer is a force to be reckoned with. Combining Scandinavian metal influences with groove, ambiance, tone and melody, the band has teamed up with NoCleanSinging.com for the North American premiere of their lyric video and second single "The Solipsist".

Seven years in the making, from the writing process up to the final mastering to launching a successful online crowd funding campaign on Indiegogo (raising over 18,000 Euros, thank you video here), along with increasing their funds through live performances, which saw them open for such bands as Opeth, Textures, Suicide Silence, Unearth and Attack Attack! plus an unforgettable slot at Wacken in 2014. "Solipsis" is 14 tracks of brutality blended with groove and emotion produced by Merel Bechtold with recording done at Mantis Audio Studio (Delain) and mastering by Jens Jorgen (Opeth, Arch Enemy, Soilwork).
Guitarist Merel Bechtold comments:
"‘Solipsis’ is a guitar oriented record, is has been recorded as organic as possible: partly at home, partly at Mantis Audio Studio. The song ‘E.M.D.R.’ is written by fellow guitarist Michael van Eck. All the other songs were summoned by myself. The lyrics are written by vocalist J.D. Kaye. And even though the music is at times technical and challenging, it's undeniably driven by relentless groove, enhanced by hugely melodic passages, wonderful tone and moments of ambient clarity."
"Solipsis" will be available on CD, Vinyl plus as a digital release and is available for pre-order here. Their single "Terra Nil" is available for download and stream on iTunes, Amazon, Google Play, Spotify, Deezer.
The CD and Vinyl versions have slightly altered artwork. Merel Bechtold was responsible for its concept and bass player Frank van Leeuwen designed and finalized the covers.

“Really digging the album, honestly! You guys have managed to blend brutality with groove and emotion in a great way!” Jens Bogren (Opeth, Arch Enemy, Soilwork)
The album was produced by Merel Bechtold. Mixed by Mantis Audio. Mastered by Jens Bogren (Opeth, Arch Enemy, Soilwork). Merel Bechtold was responsible for the artwork concept and bass player Frank van Leeuwen designed and finalized the cover.

Groove, ambiance, tone and melody: leave that up to the Dutch melodic death metal band PUREST OF PAIN (est. 2008). Their debut album ‘Solipsis’ is a force to be reckoned with. Guitarist and main songwriter Merel Bechtold, who’s already toured the world with the much respected bands Delain, MaYaN and The Gentle Storm/Anneke van Giersbergen, is leading this energetic quintet from Holland. On March 1, 2018, ‘Solipsis’ will see the light of day: it’s a must for fans of Scandinavian sounding metal!
PUREST OF PAIN has been a relentless live act for a few years now. After having released the EP ‘Revelations In Obscurity’ (2011) and the single ‘Momentum’ (2013), now it’s time for their debut full length album ‘Solipsis’. The band didn’t hold back one bit. It took them seven years to create it from the writing process up to the final mastering.
PUREST OF PAIN have supported bands like Opeth, Suicide Silence, Unearth and Textures, and were representatives for Holland during the Metal Battle at Wacken Open Air 2014.
2018 marks the return of Oxford-based sludge-metal titans Desert Storm as they prepare to follow the release of 2014’s critically-acclaimed ‘Omniscient’ album with their new opus ‘Sentinels’, confirmed for release this coming March 16th via APF Records.
Recorded with engineer Jamie Dodd (Orange Goblin) at Flesh & Bone Studio's, Hackney and tracked by Steve 'Geezer' Watkins at Woodworm studios (which has also been used by legendary Black Sabbath guitarist Tony Iommi), ‘Sentinels’ is a colossal sounding record, it’s ten tracks punching the listener with an oppressive towering monolithic sound that batters, but never dulls the senses.
“This album is a natural progression from our previous releases,” explains guitarist Ryan Cole. “It has the Desert Storm sound, but has moved in a much harder, darker and heavier direction.”
Today we get to hear the first rumblings from ‘Sentinels’ in the shape of ‘Too Far Gone’, a brutal, pounding powerhouse of a track that tackles the bleak subject of excessive binge drinking. “It’s the paradox of hard liquor being both the cause and the remedy of the sickness,” states vocalist Matt Ryan. “Self destruction and punishment of the body. It’s inspired by the tragic tales of Bon Scott and John Bonham, along with fictional characters Ben Sanderson of Leaving Las Vegas and to a lesser extent, Jim Lahey of Trailer Park Boys. It’s a miserable outcome as our song begins with alcoholism and ends in death.”

Dutch death metallers Anarchos stream the entirety of their highly anticipated debut album, Invocation of Moribund Spirits, at Decibel magazine's website. Set for international release on January 19th via Blood Harvest Records, hear Anarchos' Invocation of Moribund Spirits in its entirety exclusively HERE.
Featuring past and present members of of such bands as Eternal Solstice, Burning Hatred, Ulcerate Fester, Satanic Tyrant, and Profligate, Anarchos play total death metal for total death metal maniacs. Neither concertedly "old school" nor "modern" whilst rejecting neither when it comes to the grand, gutted spectrum of death metal, Anarchos create a dense-yet-dynamic maelstrom of morbid energy. Their debut full-length, Invocation of Moribund Spirits is aptly titled: such a timeless, trend-free swell of sewage and filth sounds as rottenly fresh now as it would a decade ago or even a decade (or more) before that.
Anarchos was born in 2010 when Vincent joined forces with Ardy and Martin to create raw and obscure death metal. In the rehearsal room, it turned out that the skills of the three individuals combined perfectly. The first music was written and the band was completed during the winter of 2011/2012 with Thorsten on bass and Harold on vocals.
The written songs were eternalized in one recording session of a rehearsal in the spring of 2012. This demo was raw and brutal, but did not contain the quality to release it on a true format. Nevertheless, Anarchos wanted to engulf the world with their music, so they published the demo only digitally.
After the winter of 2013, there was a change in the Anarchos lineup, with Harold being replaced by Frank on vocals. With this lineup, it was time to enter the studio and record proper material. Five songs were recorded at the Dirty Bird Studios for an EP release. The resulting Descent Into The Maelström was released upon the world by Vic Records in February 2014 on MCD and by Murder Records in May 2014 on tape. During the spring of 2015, Thorsten left.
Through the years 2016 and 2017, recordings for Anarchos' first full-length were made. Invocation Of Moribund Spirits was recorded, mixed, and mastered at the Dirty Bird Studios by Fredde Kaddeth (Massive Assault, Entrapment, Burning Hatred). The result, along with Anarchos' throttling songwriting and impassioned execution, is as crushing as it comes whilst retaining a sense of clarity. No "cavernous" smokescreen here - just classic DEATH METAL, done with dedication and sincerity.
Death metal doesn't need to be resurrected when it's supposed to be DEAD in the first place. Let Anarchos bring forth an Invocation of Moribund Spirits! Feel the full force of DEATH exclusively HERE, courtesy of Decibel, North America's only monthly metal magazine. Preorder info can be found HERE for the CD version, and HERE for the vinyl version.
"The Devoratis full stream is here!" exclaims Dutch death dealers Apophys frontman Kevin Quilligan. "Together with BrutalFullAlbums we bring you the official full stream of our new album. This album is the start to a whole new chapter of the band and we are very happy we can share it with you. The response to our new music has been overwhelming, thank you all for taking this journey with us!"
Stream Devoratis in full here!
The sci-fi epic, "the story of an unlikely union of two forces against an intergalactic race", is set for release January 22nd via Ultimate Massacre Productions, and is based on a science fiction story written by Quilligan. “We wanted to do a concept album but we couldn’t find a fitting concept, so we decided to write it ourselves. Together with all the members we fashioned our own tale to tell which has given a whole new meaning to our music.”
Apophys have been making waves since their surfacing in 2012, slowly carving their path in the modern death metal scene. Featuring members from God Dethroned and Toxocara this is a band with experience and a clear vision and approach to their writing, song structure above technicality. Their debut album was testament to that and seen the band tour internationally with acts such as Vader, Hate Eternal, Dying Fetus, Misery Index, Cattle Decapitation and many others as well as several festival appearances including Eindhoven Metal Meeting and Deathfeast Open Air among others.

The 'Releases Of The Year' series are albums chosen by myself as the best release from each country / dependency known to have an official release in the year 2017. These are alphabetized in country order so are easy to navigate. Each award has national flag featured alongside the band name, 'Release Of The Year' and Facebook link (where provided).
Who would have thought that Global Metal Apocalypse (GMA) would be celebrating 6 years this year as an international metal music outlet, giving bands worldwide endless coverage through reviews, interviews and everything in and around the edges? Not me.
I started GMA 6 years ago with the vision of unearthing, nurturing, promoting and expanding bands coverage across all continents and the islands dotted across planet earth, with the extended view of tapping into nascent metal scenes that were either unbeknownst to the wider metal community e.g. French Polynesia or to those freshly starting out at the hands of one or two bands e.g. Iron Sliver from Gabon.
6 years later and here I am, ready to announce who has won what category(s) at the annual GMA Awards. Voting went on for two weeks and saw thousands upon thousands of votes pouring in since the voting form went live.
GMA is run solely by one person, myself. But this has not put me off from continuing the site's progression and this year I started a sister site:- Global Mainstream Arts (http://globalmainstreamarts.weebly.com/) to give non-metal artists / bands coverage. But metal will always be at the forefront.
The winners at the 2017 GMA Awards are:-
