It's not often this sort of thing grabs GMA's attention but as Sean Tarry and horse owner Chris Van Niekerk celebrate their back-to-back win at South Africa's most prestigious horse race the Durban July for two years running, we could not help but notice that the horse that won it, besides being a 16-1 shot, was called 'Heavy Metal'.
Heavy Metal is the son of Arlington Million hero Silvano and is trained at Randjesfontein in Johannesburg.
Mr. Tarry acknowledges that: "He is comfortable on the Polytrack up there and I didn't want to take any risks bringing him here."
Mr. Tarry is still 50/50 on whether doing an overseas campaign even with current issues in exporting horses from South Africa.
Mr. Tarry added: "He may go, he may not. He is tailor-made for Hong Kong in December but there is no way we are going to be able to get him there by then. "Also we shouldn't turn our backs on what is on offer here. Pomodoro (last year's Durban July winner but only 13th here) is my trump card for the J & B Met. You can put a line through today so far as he is concerned. He had to race three wide and it just wasn't his day.
However for rider Khumalo, admits that the: "horse surprised me today but, when I pulled him out, he knew exactly what to do and he took off."
