Alice Cooper receives 'Best International Artist' at SSE Scottish Music Awards

10/12/2017

Alice scooped up the award for Best International Artist at the 19th annual awards held in Glasgow on Saturday 2nd December at Nordoff Robbins Fundraiser.

Accepting his award in advance when playing Glasgow’s SSE Hydro last month, Alice recorded a special video message that was played at the ceremony for the SSE Scottish Music Awards held at Glasgow’s Old Fruitmarket. Commented Alice:

“Thank you this is great. You have to survive this business long enough and rock ‘n’ roll business is not the easiest thing… We’ve been doing it 50 years and keeping the quality of the show and music up really is the whole trick to doing it. In my case though they do cut my head off every night so it’s a matter of survival! Thanks very much!”

The awards are held each year to raise money for music charity Nordoff Robbins Scotland. This year they raised over £148,000 for the music therapy charity.

Alice Cooper has just finished a hugely successful UK-wide tour, his first full UK Tour in five years, which included a stop at the SSE Hydro in Glasgow.

The shows saw Alice reunited with the original Alice Cooper band and schoolmates Dennis Dunaway, Neal Smith and Michael Bruce. The Alice Cooper band split in 1974 after which Alice went on to continued success as a solo artist.

2017 has been a busy year for Alice, who also released the new album ‘Paranormal’ earlier this year. His first new original studio album in six years saw him collaborate with his original band as well as iconic guests such as ZZ Top’s Billy Gibbons, U2’s Larry Mullen, and Deep Purple’s Roger Glover. It was recorded by Alice’s long-time producer Bob Ezrin and received much acclaim from fans and critics alike.

Alice Cooper pioneered a grandly theatrical brand of hard rock drawing equally from horror movies, vaudeville, and garage rock. With his influence on rock & roll long since acknowledged, his place in rock history and the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame secure, and his multiple gold & platinum albums, sold-out tours plus countless honours and career achievement awards, there is little that Alice Cooper hasn’t achieved in his remarkable career.

Cooper has rattled the cages and undermined the authority of generations of guardians of the status quo, continuing to surprise fans and exude danger at every turn, like a great horror movie, even in an era where 24 hour cable news can present real life shocking images.

Still touring worldwide year-in and year-out, still hosting his worldwide syndicated radio show (heard on Planet Rock 5 days a week in the UK), still writing and recording new music, Alice Cooper show no sign of slowing down.

Metal Hammer Golden God Awards 2017 - The winners

14/6/2017

For more than 30 years, Metal Hammer has been the biggest heavy metal magazine on the planet, and after a turbulent end to 2016, and their resurrection in 2017, they threw the party of all parties for their readers at this year’s Golden God Awards 2017 in association with Orange Amplification.

Taking place at IndigO2 at The O2, London on Monday, June 12, WWE megastar Chris Jericho hosted this unique and special night, which was, like all Golden Gods shows, all about the fans. There are no tables, no sit-down dinners, no industry backslapping – this is a room full of genuine fans who have voted in their hundreds of thousands to see their favourite bands be victorious. The night celebrated the best of heavy metal from the past 12 months as well as performances from some of the world’s most exciting bands.

“After a difficult end to last year in which the future of our magazine looked uncertain, we couldn’t have thought of a better way to celebrate our comeback,”
says Metal Hammer Editor Merlin Alderslade. “From the one and only Chris Jericho returning to host our awards for a record-breaking third time, to seeing legends like Tony Iommi, Tom Morello and Chuck D walk out on stage, to honouring the contemporary names who make our scene great, it was the kind of evening that only the Golden Gods can provide. As always, though, the most important thing was the metal community coming together again – and we salute everyone who has supported us in the last year and beyond, be it by coming to the show, buying our magazine or simply spreading the good word of heavy. Horns up!”

The godfathers of metal, Black Sabbath, collected the evening's main honour: the Golden God award presented by Roadrunner Records. Founding member and metal legend Tony Iommi was on hand to collect the gong in the year that saw the end of the band’s final, 81-date world tour and glittering 49-year career.

Mastodon headlined the evening’s ceremony with a blistering live set in what was one of their most intimate performances in years. Following the release of their acclaimed ‘Emperor Of Sand’ album in March, the band’s stock has risen monumentally to become one of the world’s must-see live acts, proven by them winning Best Live Band presented by Monster Energy.

Opening the show were riff veterans Orange Goblin, one of the UK’s most vital and important metal bands. Frontman Ben Ward, along with his partner Sandie Soriano, were behind the incredible campaign to raise money for TeamRock (Metal Hammer’s then parent company) staff following the closure of Metal Hammer, Classic Rock and Prog magazines – and rightly the team behind those magazines felt that Ben and Sandie deserved the Defender Of The Faith award presented by Orange Amplification.

Sweden’s Avatar brought their catchy ‘circus metal’ and enthralling theatrical live show to the proceedings. This truly unique band were also voted Breakthrough Band Of The Year presented by World Of Tanks, proving they are a band on the up. Completing the live line-up were blues rock legends Clutch, simply one of the greatest live bands heavy music has ever seen!

One of the evening’s most sought-after awards is Album Of The Year and this year it was awarded to ‘Magma’ by Goijra. The follow-up to 2012’s critically acclaimed ‘L'Enfant Sauvage’, ‘Magma’ was one of the most hotly anticipated albums of the past 12 months and also topped Metal Hammer’s end-of-year critics’ poll.

Exodus are true legends of the game. Founded in 1979 in California, they were one of the pioneers of thrash metal. A mainstay in ‘Greatest Thrash Metal Bands Of All Time’ lists, they inspire and influence bands to this day and were rightly crowned 2017’s Inspiration presented by Spinefarm Records, an award presented on the night by fellow thrash icon Mille Petrozza of Kreator.

This year’s Icon presented by uDiscover Music award went to The Dillinger Escape Plan. Currently on a world tour, the band announced earlier this year that they will be disbanding following their Tokyo date in October. In their 20-year career they’ve released six acclaimed albums and are regarded as the pioneers of mathcore.

Best International Band presented by Nuclear Blast went to Avenged Sevenfold, who continue to sell out arenas around the world, pushing the boundaries of rock and metal. Best UK Band went to Architects, whose 2016 album ‘All Our Gods Have Abandoned Us’ broke the Top 15 of the UK charts and capped off a significant and difficult year for the band.

Rap metal supergroup Prophets Of Rage picked up the Spirit Of Hammer award. This is an award for those who hold the principles and passion of metal and what Metal Hammer stands for in their daily lives. The group consists of three members of Rage Against The Machine and Audioslave (bassist and backing vocalist Tim Commerford, guitarist Tom Morello and drummer Brad Wilk), two members of Public Enemy (DJ Lord and rapper Chuck D) and rapper B-Real of Cypress Hill. On announcing the band, Morello stated, "We're an elite task force of revolutionary musicians determined to confront this mountain of election year bullshit, and confront it head-on with Marshall stacks blazing." Need we say more about them collecting this year’s Spirit Of Hammer gong?!

Iron Maiden’s role-playing mobile game, 'Legacy Of The Beast', took the Best Game accolade, with Eddie himself making an appearance via VT to collect the award. Formed in 2015, UK death metallers Venom Prison have been making a serious impact on the scene and beyond, and they picked up Best New Band. Doom metallers Pallbearer, who released their third album, ‘Heartless’, in March, have received huge critical acclaim since their inception in 2008 and picked up the Best Underground award.

Once again the guitarists got the plaudits that they deserve – after all, where would music be without the incredible axemen and women we love to worship?! This year, Airbourne’s kamikaze guitarist Joel O’Keeffe picked up the Dimebag Darrell ‘Shredder’ award, and tour de force Devin Townsend was rightly awarded Riff Lord presented by Century Media.

The Metal Hammer Golden God Awards in association with Orange Amplification winners are…

  • Best New Band: Venom Prison
  • Best Underground Band: Pallbearer
  • Best UK Band: Architects
  • Breakthrough Band presented by World Of Tanks: Avatar
  • Best Live Band presented by Monster Energy: Mastodon

Okkultokrati has been awarded Best Metal Album Of 2016 in the prestigious Norwegian Spellemann Awards, for their Southern Lord-released Raspberry Dawn album! The award is the Norwegian equivalent of a Grammy, making this a massive landmark for the band and their incredibly adventurous, genre-entangling style of eclectic hardcore punk.

As recently announced, the Norwegian mavericks are hitting the road again this Spring, with new tour dates constantly being updated. See all confirmed live listings HERE, and watch for more dates to be announced.

Last weekend in Las Vegas, Doro received her well-deserved award, acknowledging her decades-long dedication, passion and love of music.
She was met with enthusiastic applause and a standing ovation by the crowd when she received the ‘Metal Goddess’ Legends Award at the Vegas Rocks Hair Metal Awards at the Casablanca Event Center of Eastside Cannery Casino.

Doro:

"It was incredibly nice, the people celebrated endlessly and everyone in the hall stood up and clapped for me - even my colleagues couldn't rest on their chairs!"

Those colleagues were Scorpions, who received a lifetime achievement award, as well as Twisted Sister amongst other legendary artists. Doro received her third Legend Award in Las Vegas - she has already been honoured with two ‘Living Legend’ awards; at the awards shows of prominent magazines in London and Berlin in 2013.

"The first two award shows were already phenomenal, but how the Americans celebrated the evening here in Vegas, that's unbeatable,"

Doro explains after her return to hometown Dusseldorf.

But there isn't much time for Doro to enjoy this happiness as today, she will fly to Krasnodar, Russia with her band for another show on her world tour - which will take place next weekend.

Marilyn Manson is to receive the Icon Award at the 2016 Journeys Alternative Press Music Awards

14/5/2016

Picture

The Pale Emperor himself - platinum-selling rock legend Marilyn Manson - will receive the evening's ultimate honour, the 'Icon Award' presented by Equal Vision Records / MerchNOW, at the 2016 Journeys Alternative Press Music Awards, Fueled by Monster Energy!

Marilyn Manson's groundbreaking and maniacal career as arguably the biggest, most controversial artist of his time has undoubtedly left a huge mark on not just the alternative music world, but alternative society as a whole. Since the creation of Marilyn Manson in the early '90s, the seer, scribe, painter, actor, criminal, panderer of chaos, live performer and rock and roll demagogue has sold over 50 million records worldwide, including his latest offering, "The Pale Emperor".

His ninth studio album sees Manson roaring back above the froth of mass-media and mediocrity to deliver a set of soul-stripping, kiss-smearing, church floor-burning songs that comprise, unequivocally, his most fully-wrought album since 1998's epochal "Mechanical Animals". Marilyn Manson has appeared on the cover of Alternative Press Magazine four times, with his first appearance in the magazine in 1996 (AP 93). "The Pale Emperor" is also nominated for the 2016 Album of the Year award, presented by Journeys, a full 20 years after the release of his legendary 1996 album "Antichrist Superstar". Manson's unique ability to continually make trends and break the mold of the music industry is why he, along with his legacy, is the perfect candidate for this year's Icon Award, presented by Equal Vision Records / MerchNOW.

This year's APMAs, hosted by Alex Gaskarth and Jack Barakat of eight-time AP cover stars All Time Low, will broadcast live the evening of July 18 from the Schottenstein Center in Columbus, Ohio (schottensteincenter.com). The APMAs are offering a "punk-rock convention" as an alternative to the Republican National Convention taking place in the magazine's hometown of Cleveland that night.

Confirmed 2016 APMAs performers include platinum-selling headliners A Day To Remember, Good Charlotte, Yellowcard, Of Mice & Men, Papa Roach, BABYMETAL, Issues, the Maine, Mayday Parade and Beartooth, with more artists still to be announced. The 2016 APMAs also will feature a special appearance from Spencer Chamberlain and Aaron Gillespie of post-hardcore favourites Underøath, who just finished their 2016 "Rebirth" tour. Gillespie is nominated in the Best Drummer category, presented by DW Drums.

Visit the APMAs Vans Voting Site at altpress.com/apmasvote2016 to check out all of this year's nominees and vote for your favourites now! Voting has become an international phenomenon, with ballots coming in from over 130 countries. Also, visit this location for information regarding future performing artists, honorees and presenter announcements, tickets and VIP packages, pre-show parties, red carpet appearances and beyond.

Alternative Press Music Awards tickets are on sale now via Ticketmaster here, and VIP experience packages are available via SoundRink - An Experience Company! SoundRink VIP packages will include limited merchandise, elite access to the red carpet and prime indoor seating and VIP meet-and-greets. The APMAs is also partnering with PromoWest Fest (www.promowestfest.com, Columbus, July 15 to 17), so tickets will be available via their box office through Ticketmaster as well.

Last year's event earned the title of "The Grammy's of Alternative Music" from TIME Magazine. The 2015 Alternative Press Music Awards achieved over one million views on AXS TV and over three million views on YouTube. Re-live 2015's best moments via the highlight reel here. The APMAs have featured performances by some of today's biggest rock artists and bona fide legends-from Fall Out Boy, Twenty One Pilots, Panic! At The Disco and Paramore's Hayley Williams to Weezer, Joan Jett and Guns N' Roses co-founder Slash.

Building upon the success of last year's event, the APMAs is thrilled to once again be supported by returning title sponsor Journeys, a leader in the teen speciality retail scene focused on lifestyle-driven branded footwear and accessories in over 800 stores across all 50 states, Puerto Rico and Canada. In addition to Journeys, the APMAs also welcomes fellow sponsors Monster Energy, CreativeLive, DW Drums, CD Baby, Disc Makers, Rise Records, Eleven Seven Music, Better Noise Records, Musicians Institute, EarthQuaker Devices, Razor & Tie, Hopeless Records, Sub City, Roadrunner Records, Fueled By Ramen, Ernie Ball, Epitaph Records, Equal Vision Records, MerchNOW, Vans, Fearless Records, Jeffree Starr Cosmetics, AKT, SharpTone, Lovers Are Lunatics and SoundRink.

Don't miss the 2016 Alternative Press Music Awards and your chance to cast your vote for your favourite bands! Check altpress.com/apmas over the coming weeks for new announcements and information.

The APMAs are produced by Mike Shea, Joe Scarpelli, Josh Bernstein, Kevin Lyman and Marc Grant.
