Last month, Nuclear Blast announced the signing of modern metal outfit Amaranthe. To break up the recording sessions for their upcoming, yet-untitled 2020 studio album, the Swedish/Danish group kick off their 8-date »Helix Nordic Tour 2019« next week. In anticipation of the tour and to give fans a taster of what they can expect at the shows, Amaranthe have launched a drum cam video, in which Morten Løwe Sørensen can be seen performing the track 'Call Out My Name' during their show at the Ice Hall in Helsinki on February 16, 2019. Within their arsenal of hit singles - with 'Drop Dead Cynical' leading right at the front - a myriad tracks have been received very well via press and fans alike; having also gained countless plays on both radio stations around the globe and across streaming services (the group's songs have been streamed more than 100 million times on Spotify). A string of support tours have blazed Amaranthe's trail in front of huge crowds as well as at their own headline concerts (the group impressively once performed in front of 10,000 fans at Liseberg, Gothenburg). They have kept working incredibly hard over the years, the latest product of which culminated in the form of »Helix,« which achieved them some of their highest chart positions in the band's history (Switzerland #21, Germany #29 etc.). Watch Konvent's new video for the album title track HERE! Could Copenhagen become the new death doom capital? If so, one of the main reasons would be Konvent! Founded in 2015, the collective stoically trudges through the blackest mires – following in the footsteps of Mythic, Paradise Lost, Skepticism and Winter, who all unleashed the bleakest horror on mankind in the early 90s. Rikke Emilie List`s guttural vocals and tenacious riffing combined with menacingly heavy production make the debut by these four Danish women a massive, extreme metal highlight of early 2020 – and it wouldn`t come as a surprise if their upcoming album, Puritan Masochism, conjures up a deserved revival for the whole death doom genre! Set for release on January 24, 2020 via leading rock and metal label Napalm Records, today Konvent are serving up a brutal appetizer with their first single and music video for the album title track, “Puritan Masochism”. Watch it right HERE! “Puritan Masochism was the first song written for our debut album.” The band explains. “It’s about how humans have the tendency of working against ourselves, negatively comparing ourselves to others and setting unattainable goals, sometimes without even realizing it.” Konvent continue: “Our debut album, Puritan Masochism, is the result of two years of hard work. During the process of the songwriting, we were inspired musically by both death, black and doom metal, as we aimed to give this album a broader sound than our demo back in 2017. The lyrics are inspired by the fight of regaining control when surrounded by chaos of different forms, which everyone may be affected by at some point in your life.” Following their 2017 demo and highly acclaimed festival appearances at such as Aalborg Metal Festival, Metal Magic Festival and Copenhell Freezes Over in 2018, Konvent not only inked a worldwide deal with Napalm Records, but their mesmerizing mix of death and doom also led them to the big Danish stages, when they played both Copenhell and Roskilde Festival. While rapidly stepping out as one of Europe's best kept death and doom secrets, 2020 will finally see Konvent release their hotly anticipated debut album, Puritan Masochism, which was recorded live in Lasse Ballade’s studio in Copenhagen over a period of two weeks. Coming January 24 via LP, CD and Digital formats through Napalm Records, the pre-sale has just begun at THIS LOCATION! The powerful video was directed by the award-winning Finnish photographer/videographer Ville Juurikkala who has worked with a wide variety of prominent artists from Guns N’ Roses and Aerosmith to opera singer Andrea Bocelli. The recording of Cell-0 followed a four-year break between albums that gave the band - Eicca Toppinen, Perttu Kivilaakso, Paavo Lötjönen, and Mikko Sirén, all of whom are classically-trained musicians - a fresh perspective and affected the way they approached the new music. The album sees them return to their roots and is the quartet’s first instrumental album in 17 years, finding Apocalyptica challenging themselves to discover new flavours and colours in their respective instruments. “It is tough to express without lyrics, but in Cell-0, we found particles of our universe previously unknown to us,” they explained. “Millions of notes combine to create music just as millions of cells combine to create life, and when you visualize the whole thing, similar patterns appear.” Produced by Apocalyptica, mixed by Andrew Scheps (Red Hot Chili Peppers, Lana Del Rey, Metallica and Black Sabbath), and recorded at Sonic Pump Studios in Helsinki, Cell-0 sees the band soaring into ethereal space on ‘Ashes Of The Modern World,’ while diving head-first into aggressive thrash cello-riffery during ‘En Route To Mayhem.’ Rather than put strategic attention on aspects like writing singles, the band approached Cell-0 as a fully-formed piece of art, connecting the right details and hues with the energy of being a real cello-metal band. By pushing themselves to find other places and levels in their music, Apocalyptica opened up to some seemingly unorthodox methods and emotions while travelling through that creative process. “These new songs have so many layers and are so complex, and it’s not always easy to point exactly what they are about,” Toppinen expresses. “But I think that’s also the beauty of instrumental music, that the listener always can feel free to experience the same songs in very, very different ways. It’s also one reason why we don’t want to explain the songs before they’re experienced.” In support of the release of Cell-0, Apocalyptica will Special Guest with Sabaton on a 15-country, 23-date European arenas tour, including an appearance at Wembley Arena on February 8th 2020. Danish black metal band Orm recently announced the release of their long awaited second album, Ir ("verdigris"), which will see the light of day on August 30th through Indisciplinarian. Now, the band releases the first album audio excerpt. As the album is comprised of two massive compositions, the new preview showcases five minutes of music from the record's A-side in a filmed live fashion. Preorders for the album's physical formats are now also available. Orm's second album Ir is an ambitious progressive black metal work consisting of the two compositions "Klippens Lyse Hal" ("The Bright Hall Of The Cliff") and "Bær Solen Ud" ('Carry Out The Sun"), which clock in at twenty-three and twenty-four minutes respectively. The band's guitarist and singer Simon Sonne Andersen produced the album, and the band collectively designed the record's visual side themselves. Recently, Orm released the first sounds from Ir in an album trailer, but now the band unleashes the first genuine excerpt from the album in the shape of five minutes from the record's side A, "Klippens Lyse Hal." The excerpt is not sound directly from the album though but instead it comes from a recent live session in the Copenhagen based studio Black Tornado, produced by the band itself and filmed by film-makers Bjørn Patterson and Anders Dahl. Listen and watch as Orm performs an excerpt from Ir's "Klippens Lyse Hal" HERE. Orm (Danish for "serpent") assumed form in 2015, and in 2017, the band released its first and eponymous album which arose with its mythical tales of man and nature accompanied by a grandiose, melodic yet raw and direct black metal. The next chapter of Orm's history is Ir, where the contrasts are bigger, the complex is more complex, the simple simpler, and the melodies are poignant and contagious. The form is elongated, dynamic, and adventurous, and the musical ambition and performance bears witness to an ensemble void of compromise and led solely by its own flame, wherever it may lead. The album's narration revolves around the impermanence of all things and is a personal reflection on how this aspect is contained within the human drama, religion, and nature. Ir will be released on vinyl, cassette, and digital formats on August 30th 2019 through Indisciplinarian. The vinyl version is pressed in runs of 400 copies on black vinyl and 100 on white, both with a beautiful gatefold with a booklet, and the cassette version comes in 150 white copies in a slipcase. Both physical versions of the album are now available for pre-ordering via Indisciplinarian webshop HERE. In connection with the album release, Orm will play a string of Danish shows, among those a release show at Alice in Copenhagen the day before the release. The band has also added two November shows in Aarhus and Odense, and they are among the headliners at the Raise Your Horns Festival on their native island of Bornholm in September. Mainland European shows are currently being booked for early 2020. The song represents the first new material from the New Zealand based metal trio since releasing their 2018 debut album, Tū. Fans can check out the music video for "Ahi Kā" via the link below. The track is also featured on Adult Swim's new, streaming-only compilation record Metal Swim 2. Alien Weaponry's singer-guitarist Lewis de Jong talks about "Ahi Ka" (Which, like many of the band's songs, is sung in New Zealand's indigenous language of Te Reo Māori):- "Ahi Kā was inspired by the Auckland city council's decision to burn down what was considered to be the unsightly indigenous Maori village of Okahu Bay in advance of Queen Elizabeth II's 1953 visit. The eviction sparked a 40-year battle for the native Ngati Whatua to reclaim their land, including protests and battles with the police. Amid worldwide criticism, a small portion of the original land was ultimately returned with an apology and some compensation." Watch "Ahi Ka" HERE "Ahi Kā" is available for streaming and purchase through Spotify and iTunes (respectively) over HERE! Fans and music critics alike have applauded the band's approach to unifying Te Reo Māori (the native language of New Zealand) with thrash metal sensibilities; ultimately creating a sound that is driven by emotionally and politically charged conflict while boasting youthful, warrior-like resilience. Both Lewis and Henry are of Ngati Pikiāo and Ngati Raukawa (Māori tribal) descent, and began their schooling at a kura kaupapa Māori (full immersion Māori language school) where singing waiata (songs) and performing haka were a daily routine. Also ingrained in their early education were stories of New Zealand history told to them by their father, who would also introduce them to the music of Metallica, Rage Against the Machine, Anthrax, Ministry, Red Hot Chili Peppers and many others. Alien Weaponry was formed in 2010 by brothers Lewis (vocals & guitar) and Henry de Jong (drums), who were 8 and 10 years old at the time. The two would later move to the small town of Waipu in 2012, and went on to meet Ethan Trembath (bass) there in 2013. The de Jong brothers came up with the name Alien Weaponry after watching the film District 9. Alien Weaponry have also been nominated for "Best International Breakthrough Band" at the 2019 Heavy Music Awards (UK). The event takes place on August 22nd at the O2 Forum Kentish Town in London. Having released two albums to date, followed by more than 100 shows all over Europe in within two years only, and that all at the age of 24, Aphyxion have already left their impressive stamp in nowadays metal scene. With their blistering mix between modern death metal and melodic metalcore breaking genre borders, the five-piece power unit continues to release an album that elevates the band to a new level. Aphyxion has pushed and perfected their sound even further with songs that will warm the neck muscles, make you loose your voice and press replay again and again. Void presents a more contemporary and alternative songwriting taking big chances by stepping even further away from their death metal heritage. But one of the biggest changes to the sound on Void is the discovery of Jais’ vocal chords. As Aphyxion has evolved away from the death metal sound and more over to a metalcore vibe with death metal growls, the focus on the lyrics has shifted as well. Void is the most personal album Aphyxion has ever written. Today the band is celebrating the release of Void, which is now available on all digital platforms as well as in CD & Vinyl formats via: www.aphyxion.dk Stream and download Void HERE! Void has been produced by Jonas Haagensen and mixed & mastered by Jacob Hansen (Dizzy, Volbeat, Amaranthe). Inspired by a dystopian cyberpunk future and the fact that some of the biggest works in that genre, Blade Runner and Akira, are set in 2019, Denmark's high-fliers have adapted a dark musical concept for this record and take a look at the world being on the verge of ecological collapse, while humanity is fleeing into cyberspace to escape the horrors of the real world. After the epic 'Rew1nd', the band now unveils the second single of their upcoming album - their title track 'Breathe In Colours'. The song title and album name was inspired by a memory from Maja's past, as she explains: "The album title was born from an experience, I had as a young teenager, where I started wearing all black and a friend of my mother’s suggested that I wear more colours. I told her that it’s just an aesthetic preference and she replied that it was okay “as long as I remembered to keep the colours on the inside”. At that time I thought, it was the stupidest thing, I’d ever heard, since wearing black clothes doesn’t automatically mean you’re sad inside. Despite thinking that, her words stuck with me and I was able to have it make sense in a new way much later in life. For this album it’s an affirmation that even though the world sometimes seems cold and grey, there is still colour and kindness to be found, but in order to see it, we first have to find the colours on the inside." The release date is April 12th, 2019. "A completely convincing mixture of Fear Factory, Strapping Young Lad and Machine Head, Denmark's Raunchy are easily the country's best-kept secret and possibly one of the finest European “modern metal” bands I have heard in quite some time". In 2001, as one can easily understand from Blabbermouth's Borivoj Krgin words, the world went crazy with Raunchy's debut album, "Velvet Noise". The band comments:- "We knew that we were something different to the Danish Metal scene back then. We had a much more alternative approach on how we wanted metal music and our music to sound so we knew that we might get “slaughtered” when the reviews would start to tick in. I mean just our brand name Raunchy has no “metal” feel/meaning to it, so that was definitely a thing we knew would be “uphill”. Also the fact that we pretty much looked like a typical generic band from the Britpop “heydays” of Blur, Suede, Oasis, Radiohead, The Verve etc. was another obstacle - but we couldn’t care less". Raunchy soon took off, signed a deal with Nuclear Blast and went touring the world. "Velvet Noise", however, was the beginning of it all and will remain as one of the most successful debut albums from a Danish band ever. http://www.raunchy.dk/ |
