 Faroese melodic death / doom sextet Hamferð have now launched a video for "Frosthvarv (Live in the Eysturoy Tunnel)", which can be viewed at: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GEEp3XlKVbc. The track is taken from their 2018 album, Támsins likam. Hamferð comments: "Through the band's history, we've always been fascinated by performing in untraditional venues. So when we got the opportunity of actually playing beneath the bottom of the ocean, it was obviously something which we had to do. The tunnel and the sculptures by Tróndur Patursson really add to the atmosphere of the music, and we hope that the atmosphere translates through the video so people are able to enjoy it wherever they are." Hamferð's latest release - 2019's Ódn - is an EP that features the previously unreleased title track on side A and a bare-bones rendition of "Deyðir varðar" (from 2013's Evst) on Side B, both performed live on unique occasions. The band explains: "'Ódn' is the very first Hamferð-song, first performed in the autumn of 2008 and never before published. It is built from three very different sections, which still represent our music today: one part foreboding, one part violent and one part elegiac. The parts follow the narrative of a sailor over three chapters; first braving an increasingly stormy ocean, then reflecting on a long life sailing the very seas that now threaten his life, and finally surrendering to the waves.  Irish doom metal band The Grief is proud to release their new digital EP “Descent” on Spotify, Apple Music, Bandcamp & all other common streaming platforms. The EP will be released this week on Thursday, Oct 22. Lyric & guitar playthrough videos for the lead single “To Hew In Wrath” can be found at the band’s YouTube channel (link below) & on all streaming platforms. The Descent EP is the band’s second release in 2020 and follows on from the debut “Ascent” EP, released in March this year. Descent features 5 tracks of varied material, recorded during the same sessions as the Ascent EP & once again the 5 tracks were mastered by Dan Swano at Unisound. Formed in early 2016, The Grief features members from Cork-based metal bands Corr Mhóna, For Ruin and Soothsayer some of whose members had originally played together in a Katatonia tribute band (Katatonik). The Grief plays a mixture of doom-tinged metal with influences from many of the classic British doom metal bands & made their initial live appearances in 2017 before recording an initial unreleased demo with the initial line up of the band:
When the drum position was vacated by Farrow (who moved abroad), the band decided to focus on recording their first 9 songs during 2019 at Murphy’s home studio in North Cork. Recordings were completed in late 2019 with Murphy performing the drum parts until new drummer Con Doyle joined the band in March 2020. Funeral Cult was formed in 1993 by two friends Przemysław Pawlak (vocals) i Piotr Wilk (guitar). In a short time Karol Arkuszewski (drums) joined the band. They wanted to play severe and slow music which brings aura of sorrow, melancholy and dark. Lyrics were focused on Slavic people, their gods and funeral ceremonies and rites. All that described and shaped Funeral Cult’s soul. Finally Łukasz Jędrzejczyk (guitar) and Korsarz (bass) joined the band. After few months of rehearsals the band recorded demo tape „In Tristitia Et In Lacrimis” at Radio Lodz – 4 death/doom metal tracks. This put things in motion. The band was interviewed by metal magazines and started to play some live shows. During all the time the band was working on the new stuff for the first full album. And in 1995, at Radio Lodz Studio again, they recorded 5 tracks. 50 minutes of death/doom metal but closer to doom metal from Great Britain represented by early Anathema or My Dying Bride with additional factor of Celtic Frost’s sound from „Into The Pandemonium”. They entitled the album „Korowody Cieni”. And the album was officially issued by Lusitanian Music from Portugal in 1996. In that time the line-up were: Piotr Wilk (guitar), Przemysław Pawlak (vocals), Karol Arkuszewski (drums), Sylwester Wilk (guitar), Paweł Matysiak (keyboards), Korsarz (bass). After „Korowody Cieni” there is one change in the line up, Korsarz leaves the band and Grzegorz Krom (bass) joins them. In the meantime the band signs a contract with Polish label Millenium Records. They were supposed to record an EP, reissue „Korowody Cieni” and record their next full album. But everything went wrong and Millenium Records withdraws from the contract. Both parties ended in court. The trial lasted two years and the band was not able to do anything according to the contract conditions. This was the beginning of the end of Funeral Cult with their second album entitled „Mystery of Possession” recorded in 1998 and never issued. In 2006 Karol Arkuszewski (drums) decided to reactivate the band. After 19 years he meets Piotr Wilk (guitar) again. They start to reshape new face of Funeral Cult and compose new tracks with a new millennium fresh approach but with the 90’s soul. Completing the line-up takes one year and Sylwester Wilk (guitar) and Grzegorz Krom (bass) join the band again. After Przemysław Pawlak (vocals) refusal they had to find new vocalist, this place was taken by Jacek Rybak. With this line-up the band starts to play live shows in 2018. They decided to play only two old songs – „The Wonderer” from „Korowody Cieni” and „Bojan’s Song” from „Mystery of Possession”. The rest of the songs are new ones. Before the end of 2018 Paweł Matysiak (keyborads) returns to the band. This was the last factor which let the band to hit with the full strike. In April 2019 the band recorded three tracks at Heavy Gear Studio and tries to go to the open sea. They contact Lusitanian Music again. Following 2015’s universally lauded Feel the Misery album, vocalist Aaron Stainthorpe’s daughter, just five years old at the time, was diagnosed with cancer. Shocked and heartbroken, Stainthorpe put all band activities on hold while he, his immediate family, and My Dying Bride put their collective energies into eradicating what Stainthorpe called, “the cruellest of God's bitter and loveless creations.” The high hurdles, however, didn’t stop with cancer. In 2018, returning original member and guitarist Calvin Robertshaw texted his departure, effective immediately. No reason was given or explanation provided to anyone. Then, just as My Dying Bride had regrouped after positive news that his daughter was effectively cancer free, returning drummer Shaun Taylor-Steels departed right before the band were slated to enter Mark Mynett’s studio, Mynetaur Productions.
