So we now know who the winners of the GMA Awards 2021 were, but to wrap up the event in it's entirety and bid farewell to 2021 and usher in 2022, we must turn to the last bunch of awards - 'Metal Release By Country / Area'.

Greek experimental black metallers Aenaon join Agonia Records

Hailing from Greece, experimental / progressive black metal outfit Aenaon, comprising members of Varathron and Katavasia, has inked a record deal with Agonia Records. The band plans to end the five-year hiatus that followed 2016's "Hypnosophy", by putting out a new album of "heavily textured black metal".

Aenaon's Achilleas C. comments:-

"Through our 15 years of bizarre existence, we have collaborated with great musicians, amazing visual artists and passionate underground labels. We feel like this album marks a different chapter after a long hiatus and what a better way to start than signing with one of the best extreme metal record labels out there. Agonia Records has an amazing diverse roaster of well known and respected dark artists and we are very proud to become part of the family."

Serving as the mastermind behind Aenaon, guitarist / bassist Achilleas C holds ties to noteworthy Varathron - alongside drummer Haris - and Katavasia - together with vocalist Astrous. The line-up is completed by saxophonist Orestis Zyrinis.

The name Aenaon derives from the Greek word "Αέναον," which translates to "the Eternal". The band's history dates back to 2006 and encompasses, on top of several smaller releases, three studio albums; the debut, "Cendres et Sang" (2011), the lauded, "Extance" (2014) and the most recent, "Hypnosophy" (2016).

Greek death / thrashers Deathcraeft sign with Wormholedeath & announce "On Human Devolution"

     Greek Thrash / Death metal combo Deathcraeft have signed with Wormholedeath a deal for the release of their album "On Human Devolution", out on 16 07 2021 worldwide.

Band's comment:

     "On Human Devolution" is Deathcraeft's debut concept album - self-released by the band almost a year ago. The story is set in the world of the Cthulhu Mythos, originally created by prolific writer H.P.Lovecraft, and the music is an amalgamation of various extreme styles of metal (thrash, death, black). It was produced at Infinite Loop music studio (Ioannina, Greece) and mastered by well-known mastering engineer Peter In de Betou."

     After gathering many positive reviews on online media - but also through magazines, the band, in their effort to bring their music to wider audience, sought the help of WormWholeDeath Rec. Label who will be releasing the album on digital format starting from July, 16th, 2021. With the pandemic hopefully coming to an end, the band plans to return to gigging in order to support the album.

     Deathcraeft is a thrash / death metal band from Greece. It was formed in 2017 by guitarist Kostas Kalampokas who, after attending Berklee College of music created a recording studio business in his hometown, Ioannina. After producing albums for various bands he created Deathcraeft and started working on the band's debut album titled "On Human Devolution".

     It is a concept album based on H.P. Lovecraft's writings and the Cthulhu Mythos he created, but at its core it deals with socio-political issues. Soon after, new members were added in the band's line-up and its present stable formation consisted of:

Berklee College Of Music adds four orchestral scores by Christos Antoniou (Septicflesh) to their music library

Greek symphonic death metal outfit, Septicflesh, is proud to announce that guitarist and orchestral composer, Christos Antoniou, has been selected by the prestigious Berklee College Of Music to have four of his scores added to the music library. The orchestral arrangements for "Dark Art," "Enemy Of Truth," and "Portrait Of A Headless Man" from the band's tenth album, Codex Omega, and "The Vampire From Nazareth" from their eighth album The Great Mass is now available at the college.

Greek extreme metallers Karma Violens premiere title track from "Mount Of The Congregation"

Greek extreme metal horde Karma Violens have launched the premiere of the title track from Mount of the Congregation. "Mount of the Congregation" features guest vocals by Natasa Tsirou, from Greek progressive rock band The Mighty N. Stream it now at this location.

The band’s most straightforward release to date, "Mount of the Congregation" features 13 tracks of scathing blackened death/thrash. The album was recorded at Symbolic Π Studios, and produced and mixed by Costas Papadopoulos. Mastering was done at Hertz Studios.

If you believe in karma then you have to believe that violence is something innate in every human or inhuman being. Karma in the old and now Indian religions is the concept of "action" understood which creates the entire cycle of cause and effect. Violence from the other hand, is inside in each one of us, some people can control it and others cannot, but in every occasion it is a part of human nature. The combination of Karma Violens describes the action and reaction of violence, as every action in these brutal days creates a violent response.

Greek melodic blackened death crew Nightfall stream new album in advance of release date

"This album is made of anger and hope. Anger about all those stereotypes built around serious subjects affecting all, like depression; and hope for things to change for the better. We sing for younger generations to break down old misconceptions about mental disorders. Music in this album is not following a linear pattern, but rather tries to catch the entire spectrum of mood swings one is experiencing, while in this state.      It has been seven long years since the world was last blessed with new music from the melodic blackened death metal stalwarts of Nightfall. While the band has been absent from the scene since the release of 2013’s Cassiopeia, their legacy has not been forgotten. Comprising the holy trinity of Greek metal – along with Rotting Christ and Septicflesh – Nightfall was the first extreme act in the country to sign an international deal, introducing the world to the burgeoning Mediterranean scene in the early 90s. Now, the band is plotting a triumphant return with At Night We Prey, the darkest and latest chapter of Nightfall’s already storied career.

     During the first decade of Nightfall’s lifespan, the band headlined stages across Europe. Thereafter, went on to dominate international festivals such as Brutal Assault, Sonisphere, and Wacken, the latter of which the band solidified their legacy as the first ever Greek band to earn an envied spot at the renowned festival. The band eventually made the decision to switch to a studio act before they went completely silent. When reflecting upon the sudden disappearance after a steady rise from the underground, vocalist and founding member Efthimis Karadimas explained that it was due to an all too familiar beast – depression:-

     “It's because of depression that kicked in as early as mid-00s. I can write for hours and get into details about stuff gone wrong or mistreated situations, but the basis of all discouragement to move on has been depression and the effort required to get over it.”

     Despite the dark days, Karadimas did not abandon music entirely, moving on to form The Slayerking, a gothic doom metal band that has released two agonizing full-length records between 2016-2019.

     Alas, the abrupt departure of the band was not the final “goodbye” as Nightfall has been reinvigorated with a new line-up and coveted deal with Season of Mist. Karadimas has reunited with original Nightfall guitarist Mike Galiatsos, who helped define the band’s sound during the early years. With the addition of drummer and producer Fotis Benardo (ex-Septicflesh) as well as guitarist Kostas Kyriakopoulos (The Slayerking), the band is finally ready to release the tenth studio album At Night We Prey. In addition to the long-awaited new music, Season of Mist will also be re-issuing the band’s original albums that were produced by Holy Records back in the 90s. This is not the only news the band has to share as Nightfall has also vowed to finally perform again. “We are gonna play these live, including stuff never played live before,” says Karadimas.

Adding:

     "‘At Night We Prey' is a very dark and personal effort, tackling the topic of Karadimas’s battle with depression. “A beast I have experienced its teeth deep into my soul, I decided to come out and share that experience with metalheads. This is the least I can offer now to the big fight against depression. If we do not stop this, it will eat us all alive. Share your pain, speak openly about it. This is the only way to kill the demons in your mind.”

The Tolis brothers (Rotting Christ) are honoured with new species being named after them

Metal veteran brothers Sakis and Themis Tolis of the Greek metal band Rotting Christ have reached immortality by having a fossil named after them! Two researchers from the Natural History Museum in Luxembourg recently found a new brittle-star species and decided to name it 'Brezinacantha Tolis' honouring the Tolis brothers.

Frontman Sakis Tolis comments:-

"This is one of the greatest honoors I have received as an individual and musician and it gives me power to keep on creating and offer these wild times."

Dr. Ben Thuy and and Dr. Lea Numberger (research associates at the Natural History Museum Luxembourg) comment on the naming:

"When we first saw the fossil brittle star, we immediately knew it was something exciting. It turned out to be a species new to science, and so we had the privilege to name it. With the choice of the name, we wanted to combine our joint passions for science and music, and decided to honour one of our favourite bands. The new fossil belongs to an animal that lived in a dark, toxic environment in the depths of an ancient ocean, dwelling on the remains of their dead predecessors. This is pure black metal! Naming this species after Sakis and Themis Tolis is our way to issue an academic recognition of their talent and hard work. Now they own a small piece of immortality, because scientific species names are for eternity."

Greek Alternative Metallers U.N.S.I.N unveil new single and video clip “Blink”

U.N.S.I.N. are an alternative metal band from Greece which first came on the scene in 2009. Having been influenced from different music genres, they have formed a unique musical hybrid.

Just released their new single titled “Blink”, which will be included in their upcoming album. The new record is ready and bound to be released soon. With this very album U.N.S.I.N. are expected to surprise their fans. Greek Thrashers Typhus unveil the title of their new full-length album

Recently, Greek thrashers Typhus signed with Punishment 18 Records, consequently they will release their new full-length album "Mass Produced Perfection". Production and mixing was done at D Studio by Michael Karpathiou (Exarsis, Dødsferd). The new chapter will see the light later this year.
