No." On a rather overcast night at in renowned Kentish Town Forum, three bands were sharpening up their weapons of choice to slay the armada of Goths, emo's and metalheads that lined the outside of this building of sheer grandeur. Some were queuing since midday! Now that is die hard, by the time the clock showed 6:00pm, the queue was resembling the snake from that game everyone had on their mobile phones, you know? You got it! Naturally pre-show banter ensued and one guy was so joyous he was giving everyone free hugs, let's just hope he didn't give the security any hugs... So amongst the pre-show banter there were people saying what songs they want to hear, who they're hoping to meet and also why there was a guy walking around with a black skirt, tights and platform boots on, "thankfully he was skinny" one girl said, another girl remarked on a guy further up the queue by saying that he "has a Nirvana t-shirt, sure Nirvana are cool but against Motionless In White? No." This pretty much summed the mood up of the punters, no soft rock fans tonight, god no. This was going to be one of the most Gothic nights London probably has seen since the days of Bauhaus, Siousxie & The Banshees and similar bands, only jesting, this was poised to be a sensational night regardless. Pre-show Global Metal Apocalypse managed to have a sit down and natter with The Defiled's athletic keyboardist The AvD who was slightly tired but was awake nonetheless. You can read and listen to the interview by clicking this link here: http://globalmetalapocalypse.weebly.com/13/post/2013/09/gma-interview-interrogation-the-avd-the-defiled.html ^ Even at 8 rows back the crowd were somewhat perplexed... First up on tonight's phantasmagorical evening was Yorkshire's lighter-than-usual mob Glamour Of The Kill of whose improvised set rarely set the crowd in motion, except for the odd wall of death occurrence, which in itself was questionable as the performance tonight was below par by their standards. Even though the absolute sheer size of the stage did not maximize their presence, in fact it was really down to the crowd to try and cheer the band on. But credit is given when it's due and with their performance tonight, well it wasn't 100% top notch but it certainly set the crowd up for the next two musical machines. As Glamour Of The Kill rallied out their songs like a Gatling gun on crack, the crowd ironically started warming to the band's set even though they were not on song tonight, this was not one of their best performances but it certainly was not a total shambles, perhaps the next band up The Defiled could rescue the crowd from tiring out rather than being bored out. [7] RHYS STEVENSON ^ The Defiled went straight to business and reactivated London's Industrial past Next onto the stage armed with their new material from their debut Nuclear Blast album 'Daggers', was perhaps the finest Industrial / Goth / Experimental metal band London has seen since the days of Killing Miranda and Bauhaus combined, lacing together a visage of Steampunk, Goth and Cyber through Aaron Curse and his fellow members of The Defiled. This tight knit unit from North London brought their sound to the home crowd with such force that the chugging and turning of Victorian London could easily have been heard in the background, or perhaps that was The AvD making eerie sounds emerge from his keyboard as he launched it into the air, as if he was practicing juggling or ultimately enjoying himself so much that last night was merging into tonight. Whatever their secret formula was it worked, the crowd were engulfing each other through a plethora of mosh-pits happening sequentially through each song, even venturing into the old classic 'Call To Arms' towards the end. As The Defiled exploded out with their Industrialist and Horror style of metal, the atmosphere was darkening and the nearby graveyards were rocking away as the night set in on what has to be the Londoners best performance, now if only this was set in Whitechapel as the coffins on stage could have easily provided as the eerily setting for a stage production of 'Jack The Ripper'. As for The Defiled, well Vincent Hyde clearly wanted to show Glamour Of The Kill how you party by launching himself into crowd and having a crowd-surf with bass guitar in tow. It would have been much better if Dagoba was on the set, but that would be another story and in another time-frame. As soon as the London boys played the final note, the final beat, the final word and the final riff of their set, the atmosphere was as dark as the deepest depths of the Atlantic Ocean, speaking of the Atlantic Ocean the next band to embark on stage is probably the darkest Goth band of all time... [9] RHYS STEVENSON ^ Motionless In White redefined the term 'Horror Show' indisputably. It was evident that much has changed since Motionless In White's debut album 'Creatures', mainly through the greater use of industrial sounds which can be noticed on 'Infamous'; although if you own both the American and British version there's a difference there too! The crowd, already psyched from the demolition delivered by The Defiled, were into full tyrannical overload as Motionless In White delivered their sonic blast of Industrial-tinged Metalcore and Gothic imagery in tow. Through the elegant usage of what could be perceived as Victorian London style street lights (is there a theme going on tonight?) and later on the featuring of a female fire-breather as well as two female dancers adding theatrics by jesting with Chris Motionless who, by this stage, had donned on PVC pants (true Goth). As Motionless In White emitted their danceable songs and also venturing back into the past by whipping out classics like 'Immaculate Misconception' and 'Abigail' from which the latter involved the fire-breather, it was evident that this was by far the best performance they have ever delivered on British soil, and boy did they know it. Flowing into full swing, the mosh-pits were getting so huge that some punters were predicting that the bartenders might start giving out free jager shots or absinthe (we wish) to the most insane mosher, one punter said "will it be WKD given all these kids here", so what if they were youth? Metal is for any age, well maybe not for toddlers as the question is would they have stood for this? Reverting back to the performance itself, Motionless did justice and paid their dues by slamming the f**k out of the endlessly non-tiring crowd, yet whilst the set was seemingly short, it in fact was not that short, a mere hour. An hour's worth of 'Gothcore' was more than welcomed by the crowd, even when the cheekily truthful 'A-M-E-R-I-C-A' bellowed around the sublime surroundings of The Kentish Forum, the encore was enough to assure the American Goths that they were looked forward to by the London show attendees. For Motionless In White, they can be assured of a warm welcome every-time they play in the UK, could we yet see them at Bloodstock? Some attending fans at the London show certainly hope so! [9] RHYS STEVENSON https://www.facebook.com/glamourofthekill https://www.facebook.com/thedefiled https://www.facebook.com/motionlessinwhite As soon as their set had finished the crowd spilled onto the streets, some staying behind and hanging by the stage door, hoping to meet their idols, instead of doing that Em Wagner spoke to Global Metal Apocalypse to get her post-show thoughts. This was my first gig at the Forum and despite underground closures trying to scupper my plans I made it in time to see the first band. The Forum is a great little venue, like the cleaner, more dignified version of the Brixton Academy. One of the first things I noticed was the crowd and how friendly everyone seemed. Always a good sign for a good gig! I hadn’t seen or heard much of Glamour Of The Kill before but very much enjoyed the combination of heavy tunes and clean vocals. I found my foot tapping and hips swaying to most of their songs and decided I would get purchasing their music when I got home. They also produced a good wall of death which is never a bad thing! Next on were The Defiled who I have been a fan of since about 2009 when I saw them support Static-X at the O2 Academy Islington. Their irresistible industrial Metal-esque music ticks all my boxes and visually they are a very entertaining and energetic band. You can’t help but get sucked into their antics. It’s been great to see them go from strength to strength over the last few years and maintain their high standard of performance. Again, the crowd were fantastic, it’s not often you see that many smiling faces when everyone is trying to keep on their feet and avoid the flailing legs of passing crowd surfers. Finally came the headlining act, Motionless in White. I wanted to see them out of curiosity rather than being a huge fan of their music. Their look is darkly appealing and their synthy, screaming sound suggests I might like it more than I realize. With an eye watering set and some fantastically theatrical outfits I was smiling from the first note of the first song. It was clear to see that they have a solid following in the UK and did not disappoint their fans by delivering a relentless set of powerful tunes. I shall definitely be investing in their music and attending their next show. All in all the night was fantastic and I woke up the next day with multiple injuries and the post-gig blues, always a reliable sign that you’ve had a great time. Location: Southend, Essex Venue: Chinnerys Date: 18th July 2013 What a night this was what with a whole of Essex bands playing including Killing Jimmy who were unveiling their new single and amongst the whole chaos created that night, coming from Croydon were Metalcore mob Break The Boundaries; their band name did not sum up the night as they certainly broke the amps. Whilst the crowd assembled in no orderly fashion, tuning up their instruments was the first band of the evening, Southend's Groove / Metalcore merchants Cast Asunder. By Rhys Stevenson < Spencer Lewis' beat-boxing impression did not go according to plan. First up is Cast Asunder, now whilst I do not know who this band are they certainly got the crowd woken up out of their pathetic trance-like state. What pursued next was a tuned-down version of Lamb Of God, that irate sense of Metalcore smothering the room and the groove elements finishing off the crowd as they sort of moshed and danced at the same time, but whilst that happened Cast Asunder certainly delivered a well received performance, even if the music itself is nothing new they certainly seem to be heading in the right direction. Given they have only been going a year, they certainly seemed to have the potential to make that year count, and so they did. Sadly no sooner did they start did they finish their set and disembark the stage for the second act of the evening to see if they could out-do Cast Asunder. [8] https://www.facebook.com/pages/Cast-Asunder/100814216778679 This is what happens when biting the microphone > Not exactly the most convincing band of the night, here Dishonor the so called 'Metallic Hardcore' band from Southend walked the walk, but failed to talk the talk. Given credit they gave a reasonable performance but extremely fell short of one's expectations, it seems as if these sorts of bands try to play Hardcore and act hardcore without actually realizing Hardcore stemmed from punk, so whilst the hardcore dancing continued and a couple of beers got spilled (the mess was unbeerable), Dishonor did their utmost attempt at delivering a performance that would make their fans proud, I am sure it did but for me, nope they certainly lacked luster tonight and lacked even more oomph to even attempt to convince oneself of their decency tonight, it simply was non-existent. [6] https://www.facebook.com/dishonoruk < "Fart after eating curry they said, you won't feel pain they said" Clambering up on top of the stage to save the day was Croydon's very own Metalcore armada Break The Boundaries and as the lads got the crowd's focus back and excited them to such a level it made some punters weep at how this lot tonight wiped the floor with Dishonor. Break The Boundaries delivered a scintillating performance and explosion of music that could be compared to the same force experienced standing behind a taking off Boeing 747 at Gatwick Airport, you could say Break The Boundaries earned their wings tonight as a potential band to storm the UK with extreme force. Carefully orchestrated and their stage presence was sublime, there was hardly anything to fault this lot by tonight as they had simply proved their worth as a band to watch, and watch we will. [9] https://www.facebook.com/pages/Break-The-Boundaries/318528478166568 Mark apparently had neck problems > After all the metallic metal and hard hardcore hype of tonight, it was time to tune things down so many notches that you could consider the headlining act as more of an appetizer than an actual dessert, not to imply they are edible; that's cannibalism. Pow, delivering their funked up style of Pop Rock / aggressive music is Basildon's Killing Jimmy; Basildon indeed - finally something to cheer about. Getting down to business, the band's performance tonight was perhaps their best one to date, not only did they unveil a new single which in itself is a promising sign that their upcoming release is going to be an absolute belter, but also the band seemed to have notched up their performance a bit as to erase all their past performances and instate a new visage and musical element to their catchy music and beautiful lyrics. Killing Jimmy did not fail to disappoint tonight and nor did the crowd fail them, there is hope for Basildon yet.
[8] https://www.facebook.com/KillingJimmy/info < Will began to realize how heavy his guitar war At one of Colchester's pubs The Hole In The Wall, which is ironically situated next a hole in the wall originally made by the Romans when Colchester was a fortified town, three bands from all over Essex made their mark on what was to be Thames Burial's penultimate gig before calling it a day. First up was Colchester / Witham / Chelmsford mob Arise who play a combo of electronic post-hardcore with straight edge Metalcore, sure it's not conventionally new but the lads know how to mix the two together, and they did it well this night, slaying into the fans watching on and picking off those who were scattered across the pub, whether up at the bar or sitting down. Arise had delivered a damn good show despite the small stage resulting in limited movement. As soon as they got on stage it was time to leave and let the next band take the plunge, up next was Colchesterian Thrashers Dismanibus featuring new drummer Josh Moreton (formally of Kaine). [7.5] But before that I spoke to the lads on what lurks behind the Arise persona and what plans they are seeking out: Will Price was horrified by the vocalist of Dismanibus drinking WKD Blue > On comes Dismanibus, what a funny set this was, from the amount of jokes and funny banter the musicians delivered to the hilarious faces pulled, Dismanibus must be a colloquial term for tongue-in-cheek humour as the band were totally on form tonight. The only disappointing thing about the band tonight was that they lacked a little panache in their performance and as a result left the crowd attending questioning and moreover puzzled. However despite the lack of atmosphere that was expected to be delivered by Dismanibus, they performed to conformity, their conformity and in doing so lashed together a performance that is as good as any other performance they have done over the years, it was just that lack of panache that let them ultimately down and as the final song finished, the time had come to crumble and crack wide upon, for the Deathcore machine Thames Burial was about to murder en masse. [6] Thames Burial (L-R): Seb Cowie (guitars) Stu Bridges (vocals) Gav Chinnery (drums) Dex Jezierski (guitars) Kris Sawnkins (bass) Kris left the band sometime ago but duly helped the lads out on what was a memorable night. On what was their penultimate gig (their last being in Ipswich a week later), Thames Burial did no more and performed the set of a lifetime, leaving their emphatic song 'Necromantic' right to the end, so whilst fans were drinking up, there was a definite load of throwing up going on and during the band's set there was a hefty load of throwing down, mosh-pits galore. There set would not be the same if it was not for their ex-bassist Kristian Sawkins stepping into the breach to give Colchester one final farewell and it may be noted that the band made no mistake in giving the fans one final magnificent performance, even if they carried on into the future, the major and salient fact is there will always be one Thames Burial. Drink up, Throw Up, Throw Down. Oh and Seb was sporting his favorite t-shirt, from which can be seen in the photo above.
[8] RHYS STEVENSON https://www.facebook.com/AriseUK?ref=ts&fref=ts https://www.facebook.com/Dismanibus?ref=ts&fref=ts https://www.facebook.com/thamesburial?ref=ts&fref=ts < Clinton playing guitar whilst dreaming standing up Terrorizer Grindhouse and the line-up from this evening featured two London bands and one Ipswich band, on this cold and bitter evening the warmth of The Hobgoblin (The Devonshire) kept all metalheads attending satisfied until a sound that came from the far corner of room filled the pub with the noise of riffs, drumbeats and sound-check, it was Black / Death Metal mob Nathicana warming up and as soon as they unleashed their first song from the depths of hell, the temperature in the room rose above 30C as the sweat began to drip from the band as they slaughtered all those caught up by the audio blast. Mauling each and every individual one by one and at the same time producing a performance that sufficed everyone's expectations, whilst the brainchild behind Terrorizer Grindhouse, the one and only Miranda Yardley looked on with a smile on her face, knowing that the lads had set out the path for the other bands to follow, a path full of explosive music and sheer satisfaction amongst the attendees, sadly as soon as the last song was prepared to be executed, it was time for them to make their exit and let the Suffolk crew take over, namely The Conflict Within. [7.5] Phil was already staring out the git that stole his pint of beer > Soon it was time for The Conflict Within to make their mark, minus one musician of whom could not make it due to personal issues. This sadly meant that their live sound suffered a blow and although they gave a spectacular and mesmerizing performance, the sharpness was cut down in size and so therefore they lost the cutting edge playing style they usually mount on top of the stage. But none the less the band from Suffolk done their duties and played a show that would make the missing musician all so proud, again this was not the band at their best but they made attempts to keep their integrity and elaborate musicianship intact, soon time passed and it was their turn to leave the stage for the headline act L Sol Tace, but the likelihood is that next time The Conflict Within play this venue or indeed live again, they will be bigger, better, badder and harder. [7] < Anton Swan practicing his trick for Halloween 2013 This is the first time seeing L Sol Tace line-up without their ex-guitarist Johnny D'mage (who now plays for Arjento), at first it seemed as if it was going to be a generic Metalcore sound that the band was going to produce, taking into account the visual look and instruments utilized, however the resulting performance was on par with the same sound experienced by Lamb of God, that elegant mix of Groove Metal with Metalcore. L Sol Tace (which means 'the sun is silent' and comes from Dante Alighieri's 14th-century epic poem Divine Comedy) had proven they are more than capable of silencing the tipsy individuals in the pub by this time of night and capitalized on that by delivering a face-smacking punchline that consisted of riffs, blast-beats and gnarly vocals. All in all this was a decent performance and is sure to act as a foundation for the band to improve upon when playing live.
