Black/death stronghold Embrace of Thorns stream the entirety of their highly anticipated fifth album, Scorn Aesthetics, at heavily trafficked web-portal IndyMetalVault.com. Set for international release on June 22nd via Iron Bonehead Productions, hear Embrace of Thorns' Scorn Aesthetics in its entirety exclusively HERE.
For nearly 20 years now, Embrace of Thorns have built a prolific-yet-patient catalog that defies easy categorization. Deeply rooted in ancient black metal and death metal to be sure, these Greek iconoclasts' sound nevertheless has often been "too black metal" for most death metallers and "too death metal" for most black metallers - likewise, they pre-empted the bestial metal by at least four years, and later on solidified songwriting finesse far "too clean" for most bestial worshippers - and sadly, wider acclaim in the underground has eluded them. For those KNOW, though, the name Embrace of Thorns has come to mean a gold standard in black/death METAL, and while "acclaim" has never been in their lexicon, long-time supporters Iron Bonehead welcomes the band with the riveting Scorn Aesthetics.
Whereas earlier Embrace of Thorns recordings - particularly their cult earliest albums, 2007's ...for I See Death in Their Eyes... and 2009's classic Atonement Ritual - melded the swarming, gibbering chaos of bestial black metal with the molten muscle of the most sepulchral death metal, with 2014's largely overlooked Darkness Impenetrable did the band cross a Rubicon, of sorts, into more streamlined and martial territory. It's a move that might've alienated the more underground-dwelling of Embrace of Thorns' potential fan-base, but one that made their name ever more unique, and they continue that upward/onward trajectory with Scorn Aesthetics.
Encased in their most powerful and punishing production to date, which amplifies the band's growing clarity without sacrificing an ounce of grit, Scorn Aesthetics sees Embrace of Thorns firing on all cylinders...and then crushing them underfoot. Across the album's generous-yet-concise 43 minutes, each of these seven tracks builds with patience and poise, but somehow elusively convey a sense of explosion, detonation, immolation. The effect is one of vortextural churn 'n' spun, slipstreaming the listener into a roiling, ceaselessly humid mass but offering no hope nor reprieve. More generally, Scorn Aesthetics is built upon walls of RIFFS - be they "death metal," "black metal," or just pure METAL - all coalescing into an occult fury, immediately engaging every step of the way and memorable to the very end.
Greek Death Metallers Gravewards will release full-length debut album Ruinous Ensoulment July 27 through Unspeakable Axe Records (the album will be available through international distribution channels on August 31). New track "Sworn in Denial - Omega Syndrome" is streaming at youtu.be/7d6krIt4Xjo
Pre-orders are available now at this location.
Appearing almost completely from thin air, Greek death metallers Gravewards made a small but intense impression with their 2017 demo Subconscious Lobotomy. That independently-released 4-track tape was the kind of death metal too rarely heard in recent years, having the spirit of the original bands but not married to any particular influence or scene. Rather than emulating an album or style they loved, Gravewards paid some homage to the sounds of the 1990s while finding their own way forward.
Now their debut full-length Ruinous Ensoulment is here, and it delivers thoroughly on the promise and the mission statement of their demo. Seven bludgeoning tracks and one intro deep, this album has the band reaching a very early peak in their young career. Songs are technical without descending into wankery, often utilizing the kind of backward, nightmare-logic riffs that initially separated death metal from thrash, but which many bands now have either discarded in favour of straightforward Slayerisms or pushed to an incomprehensible extreme.
Gravewards finds fertile ground in between, delivering one line after another that is somehow incredibly catchy but also very unique. These passages often give way to either groovy mid-tempo parts or bursts of full-on melody, without ever becoming saccharine - again, a degree of good taste is shown that is too rare in a genre where bands like to find what works and then double or triple down on it. Over these well-developed compositions, vocals are less growls than the shouts of a crazed demon choking on the blood of its enemies. Nothing about Ruinous Ensoulment is rote or easily expected; instead Gravewords marks out their own territory with the creativity and fearlessness that was more prevalent when the genre was still new.
Greek heavy metal band, Null’o’zero, have released a new music video for 'The Last One', the track is taken of their new album ‘Instructions To Dominate‘, due out on July 13, via ROAR! Rock Of Angels Records.

‘Instructions To Dominate‘ is the 2nd Official album by Null’o’zero, an album that was written in a very difficult period for the band. This is the reason why the album is so aggressive and driven by emotion – anger, grief, pain, frustration – but it also gives hope to take courage to stand with our heads held high.
It’s a natural evolution of the first album ‘The Enemy Within‘, preserving the band’s unique character. Solid rhythm section, diverse riffs, outrageous solos and imposing vocals blend to an intriguing balance between melody and aggression.

Hellenic black metal masters Varathron have teamed up with Decibel Magazine to premiere a music video for the track "Remnants Of The Dark Testament", taken from their new album "Patriarchs Of Evil", out now Agonia Records. The video was filmed by Sotiris Benekos. Watch the uncensored version of the video at this link:
Co-founded in 1988 by Stefan Necroabyssious, the band's vocalist and sole original member, Varathron has been on a steady release schedule since 2004's "Crowsreign". The latter album introduced Haris (drums) and Achilleas C. (guitars) to the band, who were later joined by Sotiris (guitars) and Stratos (bass). Together, they established a new, well-bonded line-up of an already established Hellenic black metal act, considered as one of the forefathers of the genre, next to Rotting Christ and Necromantia.
Having previously described "Patriarchs Of Evil" as "heavy, dark and full of melodies that will revive past memories", Varathron elaborates on the successor to "Untrodden Corridors Of Hades" (2014):
"The time has come to deliver our new opus 'Patriarchs of Evil'. A sinful sip of this unholy communion will lure you into an astral journey of absurd dimensions - with an awakening smell of the old era. This album is one of the finest pieces Varathron has ever unleashed. We promise a true heavy, blasphemous and unique masterpiece with Necroabyssious delivering his best performance ever. With glorious riffs, profound melodies and a solid rhythm section, this dark testament is to delve into. The time of the rejuvenation has come!! WE ARE FOREVER IMMORTAL!!".
"Varathron are proudly spreading the Mediterranean plague since 1988! 30 years have passed and we continue to worship darkness and preach the unholy word! 'Patriarchs of Evil' is not just a new album, it is a celebration and one of our greatest creations. Behold the 8 hymns!".
"Patriarchs Of Evil" was recorded, mixed and mastered over the course of 2017 by Achilleas Kalantzis (aka Achilleas C.) at Crown Audio Conspiracies, except for drums which were recorded at Infinite Loop Music Studio. Both studios are based in Varathron's home town of Ioannina, Greece. The album's artwork and layout were designed by Juanjo Castellano. New band photos were taken by Evi Savva.

Greek black metal mystics Melan Selas stream the entirety of their Reon compilation LP at Decibel magazine's website. Set for international release on May 25th via Iron Bonehead Productions, hear Melan Selas' Reon in its entirety exclusively HERE.
Melan Selas are a black metal duo hailing from Greece, comprised of vocalist/lyricist Ἀστραία (Astraea) - Oletir and multi-instrumentalist D.K. Formed in Trikala in 2016, the selfsame four-song Melan Selas debut EP soon followed that year on CD format. Here, Melan Selas march triumphantly forward with a mid-tempo, bass-driven sound that largely recalls the classic Hellenic black metal canon, but with a Lilith-like magic all their own. In fact, the titles to the EP's first two tracks - "Ethereal Annihilation" and "Ancient Spirit" - ring truer than most other descriptions of the band's sound.
Stoic and steely, simmering with a touch of madness spilling over into mysticism: this first recording set the stage for Melan Selas' next strike, which are two brand-new epics collected here for the first time. Longer and stronger, given to galloping blasts of speed, the latest developments of Melan Selas' sound charge forward with even more excitement and an addicting sense of victory. Additionally, a further flare for the classic Greek black metal sound is both defined and reinvigorated; you could easily say Reon came out 25 years ago as you could today. But let it be known that Melan Selas are no mere nostalgia act: their black metal is a deeply personal and potent sort, done with equal amounts reverence and abandon.
With their Melan Selas EP completing side B of the vinyl LP, Melan Selas' Reon is a dramatic introduction to what surely could become the black metal underground's new king and queen. Hail Hellas! Hail fully exclusively HERE, courtesy of Decibel, North America's only monthly metal magazine.

Greece's Rotting Christ arrested in Georgia on grounds of terrorism-related charges pertaining to band name
Rotting Christ have been arrested in the Eastern European state of Georgia on spurious grounds involving charges of terrorism allegedly based on the band's name.
Rotting Christ frontman Sakis Tolis relates the events in his own words:-
"We arrived in Georgia's capital Tbilisi very early in the morning of Thursday, 12th of April. After the regular document check at the border, my brother and I were stopped by the police on our way out from the airport. After some minutes, we were ordered to follow police to another area of the airport under the pretence of further questioning before entering the country. Instead, we had our passports and mobile phones taken away and were lead into a prison cell. When we were demanding to be told the reason for this arrest, we were simply told this information would be 'confidential'. Our lawyers informed us later that we are on a list of unwanted persons of national security that branded us as Satanists and therefore suspects of terrorism.
Without previous warning and no official reason, we found ourselves in jail, locked into a small and rather dirty cell and without being permitted any contact to the outside world or legal representation or our embassy for 12 hours. Conditions were bad and no further information provided during this time.
Luckily, only the names 'Tolis' were on the list and the other two band members started to work with the local promoter to extract us from prison and commence legal procedures. It took strong efforts and a complicated procedure to find a solution. Due to the hard work of the local promoter, who involved legal experts, journalists, and activists in Georgia, we were finally released. We are extremely grateful to everybody involved in this process. In the end, we were even able to perform our show and it turned out to be a fantastic night. We would also like to thank all our Georgian metal brothers for their overwhelming support!"
Rotting Christ were allowed to leave the country towards Armenia without any further complications.
