Balancing the melodicism of bands like Paramore with a Slipknot-like ferocity, the three teenage sisters of GFM (GOLD FRANKINCENSE & MYRRH) have created their own niche – a sound they have dubbed “beautycore” – exemplified on their new single, “I Don’t Need Your Fantasy,” produced by Joey Sturgis (Of Mice & Men, The Devil Wears Prada, Attack Attack!, Asking Alexandria). “’I Don’t Need Your Fantasy’ is about breaking stereotypes and letting go of the false perceptions that you think you have to carry,” says bassist/vocalist Maggie English. “You don’t have to live a cookie cutter life. You don’t have to change yourself just so people might like you better. We’re being unapologetically ourselves, and we’re taking the world by storm.” Clearly not your average teenage girl band, CJ English (guitar/vocals), Maggie English (bass, keyboards, vocals) and LuLu English (drums, vocals) are breaking boundaries in the music industry and bringing life back to rock and metal with GFM’s encouraging and positive message. “You can tell when someone is passionate about music,” says Joey Sturgis. “You can hear it in the way they sing each line or play each note - and these girls have it. GFM has a fire that won’t be put out and a passion that can’t be matched. This band is a prime example of where music is going as a business. The industry is changing and these girls are at the forefront of the evolution that’s happening. It’s exciting to watch and be a part of!” The sisters all began taking music lessons at just five years old, which sparked a love of music that would continue to grow. As they grew up, the girls collectively decided that they wanted to pursue this love for music professionally, and began putting blood, sweat, and lots of tears into creating GFM. GFM’s first album, Identity Crisis, was released in 2016, followed by Oh, The Horror! in April 2019. After touring the US multiple times, the group headed overseas to Germany in 2018, where their energetic performances established GFM as a festival favourite. A new EP is scheduled for release this spring. GFM is currently on tour in the US and will be at several NAMM events, including the Women at NAMM Event on Wednesday, January 15 from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m., SJC Drums’ event at Chain Reaction from 4:30 to 10 p.m. on January 17 and the Gator booth at 1 p.m. on January 18. Greek black metal legends Kawir stream the entirety of their highly anticipated eighth album, Adrasteia, at Decibel magazine's website. Set for international release on January 10th via Iron Bonehead Productions, hear Kawir's Adrasteia in its entirety exclusively HERE. For over 25 years now, Kawir have been one of the unsung pillars of the classic Greek black metal sound. While the names Rotting Christ, Varathron, and Necromantia are incredibly important to that style's foundation, it was Kawir who kept the faith during the '90s and into the new millennium. In 1994, the then-young band released two pivotal 7"s, Eumenides and a split with Japan's Sigh - on the pivotal Cacophonous Records, no less - and then followed those up in 1996 with the To Cavirs MLP, which is the first truly pagan-oriented record to hail from the Greek black metal scene. With that mini-album, Kawir set about on a Hellenistic crusade to celebrate their native gods and mythology in their lyrics and sartorial presentation. From the late '90s onward, the band continued to remain prolific, perpetually committed to fine-tuning their idiosyncratic craft, culminating in underground classics Arai (2005) and Ophiolatreia (2008). Although 2012's Ισόθεος featured a cross-continental line-up, the album further solidified Kawir's status as unique icons in the black metal underground. Come 2016, however, Kawir aligned with long-time fans Iron Bonehead and released their first album through the label, the massively acclaimed Father Sun Mother Moon. That album saw Kawir return to an all-Greek line-up and recast their classic sound in a whole new light, and continued that forward momentum the next year with the fiery Exilasmos. If the 64-minute Father Sun Mother Moon was the sound of Kawir indulging their most epic expanses - always with power and poignancy, it must be said - then the 42-minute Exilasmos was its punchier and more restless counterpart. Taken together, both these albums for Iron Bonehead formed an exciting new chapter in the ongoing Kawir saga, and suitably saw the band reach a whole new generation of fans, their fire seemingly inexhaustible and a veritable fountain of youth. Perhaps not surprisingly, that fountain overfloweth with Kawir's eighth album, Adrasteia. Although three years separate this and its full-length predecessor, Adrasteia amazingly brims with an urgency that's simply startling for a band of such veteran status. Upon its first few resounding notes, Adrasteia is immediately and engagingly Kawir - and as the ceremonial slow-burn of opening track "Tydeus" builds, anticipation is set exceedingly high, these Greeks working a simmering spell of sumptuous splendour. The track segues into a heroic march by its latter third, with that ever-so-enticing Hellenic mysticism taking root, before the fury fully begins with the following "Atalanti." Indeed, that fury doesn't relent for the remainder of Adrasteia, but Kawir carefully keep their pacing nuanced and dynamic, with each of these six characteristically cascading tracks unveiling a breathtaking landscape of sonic peaks and valleys. But, as ever with Kawir, the sonic portrait they paint is imbued with a deep lyricism hailing the Greek pantheon. In the case of Adrasteia, its namesake is the goddess of female revenge, and honourably does the album's lyrical concept focus on heroic women and the cruelty around them. For this unique and tasteful exploration, Kawir here have gathered together a whole host of incredible guests, including Macabre Omen main-man Alexandros on all clean vocals, the ethereal Norwegian voice of Lindy-Fay Hella on the stark 'n' haunting "Colchis," and Melechesh's Ashmedi giving a guitar solo on "Danaides." Altogether, Adrasteia makes for Kawir's most quintessentially Greek album in many years - ever longer may their pantheon reign! Fully experience that reign exclusively HERE. www.facebook.com/kawirblackmetal www.facebook.com/IronBoneheadProductions Swiss Technical / Melodic Death outfit Arcaine to release "As Life Decays" on February 14th7/1/2020 The debut album of Swiss Technical / Melodic Death Metal act Arcaine, which will be titled "As Life Decays", will be released on February 14th via Black Sunset / MDD! Recorded in the Blue Wonder studio in Chur, Switzerland, the album features 9 songs that will kick your ass with a relentlessly hard sound. Focused less on death and the devil and more on current socio-critical themes, the band's debut album was mixed by Vladimir Cochet at the Conatus Studio in Vevey, while Max Morton (Morton Studios, Jinjer, Sacrosanct, among others) is responsible for mastering. Artwork was taken up by Russian artist Xaay and visually implemented on the cover artwork. Canadian death metal band Atrae Bilis have signed to our label and will be unleashing their debut full length titled 'Divinihility' this year. The official announcement link can be found HERE. The band states:- “Atrae Bilis is pleased to contribute to the dynamic soundscape of Transcending Obscurity. Future plans set by both the label and band are exciting ones, and we’re thrilled to push Atrae Bilis into the underground under their banner.” Label owner Kunal Choksi comments:- “I’m thrilled to work with a promising new band like Atrae Bilis who show great ambition and drive. Their music is hard-hitting and contemporary in addition to being unpredictable which is hugely impressive these days. Moreover, they’ve nailed the aesthetics securing a fitting artwork by Adam Burke (Coexistence, Lurk, Imperialist) and also getting the sound right. I can’t wait to put out their debut full length as soon as possible.” The band released their official video for the song Ectopian which will be featured on the upcoming 2020 label sampler to be released on January 5th, 2020.
