 Photo: KantalaSyndrooma A pioneering band of Finnish melancholic metal Lyijykomppania came to an end in 2022 with the passing of founding member and drummer Esa Moilanen. However, a new lineup, KantalaSyndrooma, was formed in 2023 to carry on the band's legacy, featuring musicians who had played with Lyijykomppania over the years. Rather than a tribute act, it is a band forging its own path, though Lyijykomppania songs may occasionally be heard at their live shows. The band has been quietly preparing its debut album, "Aavan Suon Tuolle Puolen" (in English: "Beyond the Vast Marsh"), set for release on November 6, 2026. Now the band offers a taste of the upcoming album with the single and music video "Viinanpolttajien Laulu" (in English: Moonshiners Song).
Guitarist and songwriter Lindström provides some background on the release:- "While composing the song, an idea for the lyrics started taking shape in my mind, which in turn sparked an idea for the video; it was an efficient process in that sense, having three ideas swirling around at once. 'Viinanpolttajien laulu' is perhaps the album's most lighthearted track, even though the subject matter is grim—we are in the ninth winter of the nuclear winter following a nuclear war. A group of 'jolly' men have retreated into the wild to escape the post-nuclear world, taking their moonshine stills and other essentials with them—and the forest certainly offers plenty of wood to burn. And although there is a glimmer of hope that the sun might appear again someday, there is little desire to return to that wretched world, as long as the booze keeps flowing and they can occasionally shout their lungs out into the dark forest." The band's story will continue in the future, as the next release is already in the works. Time will tell whether it turns out to be a full-length album or an EP. Listen to the single on Spotify. The track also marks the first time ever that Mariska has appeared on an extreme metal song. While the new song was inspired by the final words written by Taiwanese political prisoners to their loved ones before their execution, vocalist Freddy Lim discovered that, despite the historical differences between the two countries, Finland’s history also contains similarly heart-breaking stories of separation, loss and survival. As Freddy researched the subject further, he made a surprising discovery: during the Winter War, stories of Finnish resistance were frequently reported in Taiwan Minpao, the first newspaper founded by Taiwanese people. At the time, Finland’s struggle against overwhelming odds provided inspiration and encouragement to Taiwanese readers. Many of those readers would later become political prisoners in the late 1940s. The idea that people on opposite sides of the world could share the same emotions and struggles – and even inspire one another – deeply moved Freddy. Around the same time, he met Mariska and became interested in her artistry and poetic approach to song writing. “This takes me back to my good old punk hardcore days – it’s a really interesting experience!” says Mariska. “When I first heard Chthonic, their powerful music and videos made a deep impression on me. So when they contacted me and suggested a collaboration, I agreed almost immediately.” “I hope listeners can feel the sadness in the song, but also find comfort in it. Death is something we all have to face sooner or later, and none of us can avoid it.”  The band’s other key songwriter and guitarist Jesse Ulas Liu adds: “I think this is Chthonic’s first love song. It’s a love song filled with conflicting emotions – grief, guilt, regret, despair and hopelessness. Although you can still hear the style that is characteristic of Chthonic, we have also brought in many new elements. I hope our fans will find it refreshing.” During the song writing process, bassist Doris Yeh once again refined the original demo by Freddy and Jesse and helped shape the song, in much the same way as she has done with the band’s most recent releases. “We no longer rush to release music the way we used to. Now we finally have the opportunity to work carefully on each song, one at a time. I really appreciate that we are still able to make music together, so I wanted to think carefully about every detail,” says Doris Yeh, adding that she also discovered a surprising connection with Mariska through her well-known song “Terveisin Doris.” The members of Chthonic are currently literally spread across opposite sides of the world, with Freddy and Doris living in Helsinki while the rest of the band are based in Taipei. “Freddy still sends messages on every possible communication platform!” laughs Dani. “It still feels like he’s right here with us. But that’s a good thing. Following some years of playing more casually and getting a full-time drummer Matias Rokio onboard, a proper production was started at 2021 with the release of debut single 'In Their Name'. Right after their first release, ETE played their first gig and completed the line-up with Janne Pihlajaniemi (bass). The band's first EP 'Signs' was released in the spring of 2022 and was followed with a single release 'Out of Time' that has enjoyed some attention even internationally. Musically, Erase This Earth combines the elements of melodic death metal with a hint of tech and progressive styles that mirror the main composers' personal preferences and musical backgrounds. This keeps the discography fairly diverse with songs ranging from straight warp-speed barrages to more progressive works such as ‘Signs’.

 Photos: Konsta Vihavainen The four-piece deathcore band Enemies Everywhere have released their highly anticipated self-titled debut album. Formed in 2022, the band first made their mark on the Finnish metal scene with their Endless Discord EP, released two years ago, introducing a new wave of Finnish deathcore with a relentlessly aggressive approach. Last year, the band underwent a line-up change as Sasu Mikkola took over vocal duties. Following the change, Enemies Everywhere turned their focus even more strongly towards developing their own musical identity, refining their sound and putting the finishing touches on the album. The result is a self-titled release that sees the band’s sound taking on a stronger and more distinctive form than ever before. “The release of the album is an important milestone for us, as we spent a long time refining the songs and developing our own sound for the record. There’s nothing more rewarding than seeing people enjoy our music when we finally get to play these songs live!
