After the release of a demo and an EP, in 2016, the band released their debut album, Worship Macabre, via Kill Again Records, which is also the label home for Violator, The Force, Attomica, etc. Emboldened by that momentum and striking while the iron's red fucking hot, Hellish Grave return with an even stronger second album, Hell No Longer Awaits, via fans-from-the-beginning Helldprod Records. Pushing forward a more unique identity with the force of an iron fist, Hellish Grave here aren't easily labelled as simply "blackthrash"; their songwriting chops have deepened, and they've found an ever-elusive balance between tight execution and Bachanalian wildness. More to the point, they're delivering fucking ANTHEMS that are more accurately described as BLACK heavy metal: the headbang reigns supreme, and it's supremely evil. An ever-growing force in the forever-fertile Finnish black metal underground, Malum have become a Satanic power in their own right since their formation in 2013. From there, the band have committed a prolific stream of atrocities, including two celebrated albums - 2015's Crowned with the Serpent Sun and 2017's Night of the Luciferian Light - three EPs, and three split recordings, alongside such comrades as Lathspell, Insane Vesper, Sacrificium Carmen, and Sarkrista. The latter two bands joined with Malum for the spiritually aligned split LP Trinity of Luciferian Illumination, which was released by Purity Through Fire in late 2018. Now joining the esteemed ranks of Purity Through Fire following the preview Terror Rehearsal earlier this year, Malum are prepared to make their grandest statement yet with Legion. Titularly elegant in its simplicity, Legion storms forward from its very first seconds with that paradigmatic "freezing fire" so crucial to classic Finnish black metal. But whereas so many past but especially present have sought to dilute or "diversify" the intrinsic power of that idiom - and FAILED, obviously - Malum proudly hold high the torch of traditional black metal values, striding to the head of the flagging pack to lead Finnish black metal back to its former glory. However, labor under no assumption that such is shorthand for rehashed ideas and general go-nowhere inertia. Naturally, Malum's Finnishness is immediately felt, but within those chosen boundaries do the band conjure new spells, new manners of communication, keeping the magick and language alive by imaginatively working within those proud parameters. What results is a deceptively anthemic 38 minutes that show Malum can move dynamically from spiraling speed to ominous march, always exhibiting a passion that's blanching (and inspiring) to behold. Undoer hail from Turkey, and formed in 2017. Soon, they set to work on their first public recording, the three-song/22-minute Survival is a Myth EP. Mature beyond the band's meagre year of existence, Survival is a Myth was a shock-wave of sleek and scathing black metal, brimming with a startlingly amount of violence and dynamics in equal measure. Initially self-released digitally, Undoer's first recording was so exceedingly accomplished, Sun & Moon simply had to release it on a physical format, and thus endeavoured to bring the band into their proudly exclusive stable. Alas, the international metal underground shall now witness the fire, fury, and furore of Undoer as Survival is a Myth is unleashed on a worldwide scale. The EP is ominously titled: experiencing the unhinged 'n' undulating attack of Undoer is not so much a matter of listening as it is survival, for the power-trio overload the listener's circuitry was a barrage of tense 'n' terrorizing decibels. And yet, this isn't (ultra)violence for its own sake; there's a wealth of texture and nuance coursing beneath the rotten, rusty gleam of their razor-bladed onslaught, a remarkably advanced grasp of songwriting and sound detail. As such, Undoer exhibit a palatable modern aspect to their black metal, unshackling themselves from the regressive tethers of the past - although, if one has to make references, the Moonfog school of future-shock black metal around the turn of the millennium is a favourable one, to say the very least.
