Time to tune those axes and get ready to attack with blast beats: The 17th edition of the worldwide biggest hard and heavy band contest, Wacken Metal Metal, will once again provide an arena for aspiring musicians in 2020.
As in previous years, 30 countries or regions will participate in the final round at the Wacken Open Air in 2020. In order to join the battle in Germany, bands have to apply and get invited to perform at their local Wacken Metal Battle competition first. The winners of their national finals will be given the chance to perform in Wacken.
Sascha Jahn (head of project) comments:-
"The Wacken Metal Battle has proved to be a most fertile ground for fresh talent in the hard music scene and unites young bands from all around the globe in an exciting and friendly competition each year. Even the high number of 30 slots for bands at the Wacken Open Air finals is not enough to allow each participating country and region to send contestants every year. Furthermore, we are proud to announce two new participants with Australia and Chile in 2020. This means that unfortunately some countries have to take a break either voluntarily or determined by lot. We congratulate all countries that have been drawn for the 17th edition and are looking forward to welcome those back in 2021 that are now on a hiatus."

The world’s biggest heavy metal battle of the bands is coming to Australia for the first time ever!
The legendary Wacken Metal Battle will be making it’s triumphant debut in the great southern land, giving unsigned Australian metal acts the opportunity to battle it out for a spot at the world’s largest and greatest heavy metal festival - Wacken Open Air. 30 years have passed since the creation of Wacken Open Air and now going into their fourth decade, the “holy land of heavy metal” has chosen Australia as it’s newest inclusion into the ranks of their fabled battle of the bands.
Wacken Open Air and national promoter Bailey Graham (Founder, Pinnacle Music Group) will be bringing the competition across Australia next year in search of the greatest unsigned metal band down under, and send them off to play Wacken Open Air 2020. The regional heats will hit Perth, Adelaide, Sydney and twice in Melbourne.
The process is simple - 8 bands are chosen per regional heat to compete. The winner of every regional heat is given a slot to perform at the grand final in Melbourne at the iconic Max Watts House of Music. The winner of the grand final is given a slot at Wacken Open Air in front of tens of thousands of the world’s biggest metalheads!
Winners are decided by a judging panel of some of Australia’s most prolific industry figures - label heads, journalists, promoters and other influential Australian heavy metal figures.

More than 10000 people signed a petition last year for the authorities to grant Doch Chkae the necessary visa to allow the young Cambodian band to perform at the Wacken Open Air 2018. Despite intense public campaigning and strong political efforts their application was unfortunately turned down in the end.
Yet the band, Swiss social worker Timon Seibel, and the Wacken Open Air endured and their persistence was finally rewarded. Last week, Doch Chkae were informed that their visa application has been approved and the band will be allowed to enter Germany to perform at the Wacken Open Air 2019!
Holger Hübner comments:-
"We are stoked that we will finally be able to welcome Doch Chkae in Wacken this year," says the festival organiser. "We sincerely thank all authorities involved, private individuals, and our crew, who have paved the way for this young Cambodian band to come to Germany. Music and particularly metal is an international language that connects people across all borders, cultures, and religions in friendship."
The band adds:-
"Last year's problems with our visa unfortunately made it impossible for us to come to Germany", Doch Chkae relate happily. "We are all the more pleased to have been invited again and to get the chance to play at the world's biggest metal festival! This is our biggest dream coming true! We are totally thrilled! Thank you, Wacken! Thank you, Germany!"
Doch Chkae translates as "dog life" – in which many of the inhabitants of the big slums in Cambodia are trapped. The three band members grew up in what was once the country's biggest waste dump. According to UNICEF, more than 10,000 children live on and off the streets in Cambodia's capital Phnom Penh alone. The kids catch dogs for restaurants, prostitute themselves, trade in drugs, look for recyclables in garbage or try to survive in other ways.
Theara, Vichey, Pic, and Hing were lucky - three of the homeless kids were not only lodged in an orphanage run by Moms Against Poverty, but their social worker Timon also happened to find the right valve for the angry teenagers: Heavy Metal. After visiting a concert of the deathcore act SLITEN6IX, the original trio quickly formed their own band. Doch Chkae play angry death metal – and are probably the first to use their native language Khmer.
Doch Chkae have become a role model that has long been encouraging other children and young people in Cambodia to use music as a means to gain some control over their lives. The band plays concerts for their community, has founded its own label, and even appeared on television.
Before their show at the Wacken Open Air, DOCH CHKAE will be joined by Lebanese girl band SLAVE TO SIRENS, TRAINWRECK from Bangladesh, and VALLEY OF CHROME from the Philippines to play a warm-up gig at Hamburg's Kaiserkeller under the banner of "United Metal Nations" on July 27th.

Lebanese Metallers Phenomy - after winning the Metal Battle in Beirut on April 27th - performed at Wacken Open Air 2018. The band has issued their recap of their first-ever Wacken experience:
"It was nothing like we expected, We thought it was huge but no, it was fucking gigantic. we would have 30 min of walk between sections from our camping area to the main city or to other areas. The first experience arriving to Wacken was meeting the great Derrick Green from Sepultura, now how is that for an overture of the journey!? This guy is most probably the most down to earth guy we have ever met. He would be chilling and meeting people in the area modestly. It was a dream come true to meet a guy like him. This area also had promoters and media agents from all over the world, a huge exposure for any band really.
The same night a Hot dog grill started in the Artist area, and guess who was the grill master, yes, non other that Mr. Thomas Jensen himself, co founder of Wacken open air just in front of our eyes. He was cool enough to give us an hour of his time to talk about everything literally. He completely understands the struggle bands go through to play in Wacken and he is doing the best he can to help making it easier for them. "The coolest and awesome guy we ever met and it was such a honour to meet him". Not to forget that he was cool enough to mention Phenomy in his press conference while announcing the headliners for W:O:A 2019.
Our performance at Wacken Open Air is most probably the most important one so far.The crowd reaction was AMAZING!! the way they received us, after all the technical difficulties we faced, was awesome. we were humbled. Moshpits and headbang didn't stop during the 15 min we had left. 2 Lebanese flags were hang just before our eyes and that was a hell of a boost for us. We couldn't finish the last song but we had a awesome final applause from our friends and fans. We also had the pleasure to meet Promoters, bands and fans from all over the world.
It was a really unforgettable journey that we shared with wonderful people, special thanks to Mrs Monika Bremer, Promoter of the Wacken Metal Battle in the middle east and Mr Jörgen Lindström, Ambassor of Sweden In Lebanon for being there and supporting us."

Sadly they did not win the Wacken Metal Battle, nor came in the top five, but still representing your country is an achievement on it's own. The winners were Zombies Ate My Girlfriend, a Death Metal band from South Africa.
