Lillasyster is once more in the competition to represent Sweden in Eurovision.

In 2021 Lillasyster entered the Swedish take outs for Eurovision and since then their contribution "Pretender" has risen on the charts, peaking on the "Swedish Top 50" chart for over a month and soon streamed Platinum in Sweden. The bands contribution this year is the new "Till Our Days Are Over" and is written by Palle Hammarlund and Jimmy Jansson which have had several previous successes in the competition.

"The song has a higher tempo than Pretender and is more straight on, and more Arena"
says singer Martin Westerstrand.

Finnish violent pop / metal crew Blind Channel to bring the 'Dark Side' to Eurovision 2021 as Finland's entry.

Finland are looking to repeat history as they eye up their second Eurovision Song Contest victory. Their entrant this year is Blind Channel, a band that have been sprinting past milestones and crushing their rival’s records with their enormous anthemic entry ‘Dark Side’.

‘Dark Side’ has become a #1 smash hit on the Finnish singles chart and has remained in the top 10 airplay charts for over 10 weeks, with the song now reaching platinum.

Is metal going to bring Finland the gold yet again? Listen to the song here and watch the official lyric video here.

It was written as a reaction to the global pandemic that forced the music industry to a grinding halt, synonymously crushing all the band’s 2020 touring plans. Frustration, isolation and depression gave birth to an anthem for the people, and the Eurovision Song Contest has proved to be the perfect vessel to spread their message.

Niko Vilheim, one of the band's two vocalists shares his thoughts:-

“What we really needed at that low point was an anthem for ourselves, a song that gives the finger to life itself. That’s how ‘Dark Side’ came into life. It really was an instant anthem. ’Dark Side’ is a song that’s meant to be performed together with an audience, as a kind of communal experience. Now we needed to find that audience, and we knew that there were lots of people out there who felt exactly like we did.”

Picture

After entering the track into the UMK (Uuden Musiikin Kilpailu = New Music Competition), the Finnish qualifying round for the Eurovision Song Contest itself, the sextet came away annihilating all their fellow competitors by achieving the highest score in the competition’s history and becoming the first UMK entry to hit the top of the charts.

Now with their sights firmly set on the finish line, the band will be the 14th act to perform at the second semi-final on May 20th, and if successful on the night, will perform again at the finals on May 22nd.

The competition finale will also feature performances from past winners of the competition, including Finland’s previous winning act and hard rock heroes Lordi who dominated the 2006 event with ‘Hard Rock Hallelujah’.

Finland has long been known for its love of heavy music, with international superstar acts such as Hanoi Rocks, HIM, Nightwish, Children of Bodum, Apocalyptica and The Rasmus all enjoying major global success. Now the world will be adding Blind Channel to that list.

Blind Channel were formed in 2013 in the city of Oulu, way up in the North of Finland, by a group of five talented, determined and ambitious friends – vocalists Joel Hokka and Niko Vilhelm, drummer Tommi Lalli, guitarist Joonas Porko and bass player Olli Matela. This fivesome has stuck together to this day, in the spirit of the 2018 sophomore album Blood Brothers, each of them collectively responsible for the songwriting.

Last year saw the addition of a new member, as long time friend Alex Mattson joined to play keyboard, samples and percussion and completes the current line up. Following the release of their 2020 album Violent Pop, ‘Dark Side’ is the band’s first taste of music from an upcoming album due for release early next year, working with renowned UK producer Dan Lancaster (Blink 182, Bring Me The Horizon, Don Broco).

AWS is unique not just because they are representing metal music and stage dives at ESC - also not afraid to shock the crowd - but presenting theirs song in Hungarian. All theirs behaviour is true to themselfs: pure feelings and acts from a nearly DIY band and a barefooted frontman. Please support the boys, support metal!

AWS: Hungary screams with metal at the Eurovision 2018 in Lisbon

For the first time Hungary has chosen a metal song to be the winners of "A Dal" (The Song), Hungary's national selection television show for the Eurovision Song Contest. The post-hardcore / modern metal band, AWS are going to represent their country with their emotional song “Viszlát nyár” (Eng.: Goodbye, Summer) performed in their native language in Lisbon this May.

The band was founded in 2006 by Bence Brucker, Dániel Kökényes, Örs Siklósi, and Áron Veress in high school, who were later joined by current bass guitarist Soma Schiszler. Combining different elements of nu-metal, metalcore, post-hardcore and psychedelic rock, the band managed to produce 3 full-length albums, 3 singles and 7 video clips in the 12 years of their career. Following a decade of successful club shows and even major festival appearances from all over Hungary to Austria, Slovenia, Romania and the United Kingdom, the band was announced as one of the participants of A Dal in 2017.

The well deserved victory came as a big surprise, although the band united the Hungarian metal scene like no band before. Musicians from all over the country encouraged their fans to cast their votes for AWS from popular rock musicians of bands like Tankcsapda, and Road, to members of death metal band Kill With Hate. Also, fellow competitor metal band Leander Kills asked their fans too to support AWS with their votes.

A well-known name among lovers of heavy music in the underground metal scene, AWS was chosen from 8 entries who made it through to the final rounds of the show. These acts were judged by a four-member jury consisting of well-known figures of the Hungarian music and art scene. Unexpectedly, AWS sneaked into the super-final round in the company of 3 pop music acts to steal the show: in this final stage, people from all over the world were able to vote their favourite ones. This is what ultimately earned the band their triumph: AWS knocked pop music out of their way to claim the first place with the help of metal fans.

Picture

The dynamic winning song, featuring both clean and screamed vocals, was inspired by a family tragedy. Frontman Örs Siklósi comments:

"<Viszlát nyár> was put together in a summer camp in the company of a few bottles of wine. The lyrics are originally about my father, who passed away recently. We tried to make the video a little bit different. We didn't want it to be only about my story, so other band members can relate to it as well. We've emptied all our family video archives to demonstrate the passing of time and to stress how important it is to look after our beloved ones, because nobody's got too much time here to mess around."

The band also stated that they plan to perform the song unchanged with additional visual elements and the same intensity as they do in front of their fans.

The world hasn’t seen a metal band winning the Eurovision Song Contest since Finland’s Lordi shocked the audience with their horror metal in 2006. 12 years passed, and now the chance to make the winds of change blow is here again. But if metalheads of the continent can unite once again to line up behind this band in 2018, if together we can make this competition not to be merely about pop music, that remains to be seen.

His giant project can't be pigeonholed: mystic, magic, rock and bombast meet with lush melodies and create spectacular, epic fireworks. The fans of the ESC have the chance to nominate one of the most internationally successful German musicians on February 25th for the Eurovision Song Contest 2016 in Stockholm (German National TV ARD, 8.15pm CET, live from Cologne). With Avantasia, the most exciting rock opera phenomenon of our times, characteristic mastermind Tobias Sammet creates fantastic parallel worlds with every new release. Avantasia will compete with their current single 'Mystery Of A Blood Red Rose'.

Watch the fitting lyric video here:

After he got the invitation to take part, Tobias Sammet thought about it for a while: "It seemed like a quite unusual idea to compete with anyone in art, to play music against someone. It's still weird anyhow, to play music against each other like in the Olympic Games. Anyway, who am I to get in the way of a great promotional opportunity?! Three minutes to show millions that we exist?"

Tobias Sammet also can't complain about sparse international fame until now: He’s already played in more than forty countries all over the world, his last album, »The Mystery Of Time«, hit #2 in the German charts. The most famous musicians come in the studio for his projects: Alice Cooper, members of Kiss, Mr. Big, Klaus Meine and Rudolf Schenker from The Scorpions or, for his current project (Ghostlights, out: January 29th via Nuclear Blast), Twisted Sister frontman Dee Snider, Nightwish icon Marco Hietala, Ronnie Atkins from Pretty Maids, ex-Helloween vocalist Michael Kiske, Bruce Kulick (former Kiss and Meat Loaf) and Within Temptation power woman Sharon Den Adel. The upcoming Ghostlights world tour will take his project to England, Russia, Spain, Italy, Czech Republic, Brazil, Austria, Scandinavia, Switzerland, Argentina, Chile, USA, Canada, Mexico, Hungary, Slovakia, France, Japan and from March 4th also in ten German cities.

Don't miss Avantasia at The Forum in London on March 8th. Tickets available here:
