Picture

So we now know who the winners of the GMA Awards 2021 were, but to wrap up the event in it's entirety and bid farewell to 2021 and usher in 2022, we must turn to the last bunch of awards - 'Metal Release By Country / Area'.

Usually these would include the flag of the band's nation, but given the events in Afghanistan this year among other political turmoil, I felt it would be prudent to forgo any flags and just list the winners.... so without further ado here are the....

Extreme Nation, the South Asian extreme underground music documentary now available digitally

Extreme Nation, the award-winning feature documentary film on extreme underground music of the Indian subcontinent gets digitally released on Vimeo's Video on Demand. The film is now available to viewers worldwide on the streaming platform from as of 11 AM IST/ 05:30 AM GMT, 3rd April 2020, Friday.

Abhay Singh, Executive Producer states:-

“After much contemplation we, the producers of the film, decided to release the movie online for people to watch, especially during these testing times for humanity. The whole world is hooked on digital content and wants to know what's happening around them, hence we decided now is the time. Vimeo On Demand is a creator-empowering platform democratizing the dissemination of relevant media to audiences, and is our tool of choice for engaging with our audience.”

Producer, Director – Roy Dipankar comments:-

“I have been personally talking to a few OTT platforms and agencies regarding the film for some time. However, due to too many mandates & constraints on content towards an underground film, in spite of a great international premiere and seemingly decent interest, the release got further delayed at home. On the other hand, we've been receiving viewing requests every week from around the globe. Hence, without further ado, I am super excited to share this work with the fans, music and film enthusiasts, as they've been patiently and ardently waiting for the film!”

The 81 minute-long film features commentaries from various musicians and people involved in the extreme music scene, including Bangladeshi black metal group Nafarmaan; Primitiv, Plague Throat, Syphilectomy from India; Konflict and Genocide Shrines from Sri Lanka; and Pakistani grind/hardcore punk duo Multinational Corporations. Comments from many obscure bands, metal enthusiasts, members of the underground and journalists as well as internationally touring bands like Impiety (Singapore) and Cult of Fire (Czech Republic) were also documented during their bone-chilling performances.

After one month of voting, nearly 6,000 votes cast and countless sharing across all social media platforms by us and nominees alike, the time has come to announce the winners of the GMA Awards 2019.

But before that happens, there will be a change to how the nominees are cast. For 10 months of the year we will be running a series of rounds from which the 10 finalists will be recognised for the annual event.

The system will work as thus: nominees elected in the month of January are voted for in February... February nominees voted in March, etc and finishes with nominees in October being voted for in November - the finalists will then be voted for across the month of December and into early January 2021; finishing 8th January 2021.

Now that's put out into the open, we can finally reveal the winners of the GMA Awards 2019.

Cambodian Death Metallers Doch Chkae granted visa for Wacken Open Air

4/7/2019

More than 10000 people signed a petition last year for the authorities to grant Doch Chkae the necessary visa to allow the young Cambodian band to perform at the Wacken Open Air 2018. Despite intense public campaigning and strong political efforts their application was unfortunately turned down in the end.

Yet the band, Swiss social worker Timon Seibel, and the Wacken Open Air endured and their persistence was finally rewarded. Last week, Doch Chkae were informed that their visa application has been approved and the band will be allowed to enter Germany to perform at the Wacken Open Air 2019!

Holger Hübner comments:-

"We are stoked that we will finally be able to welcome Doch Chkae in Wacken this year," says the festival organiser. "We sincerely thank all authorities involved, private individuals, and our crew, who have paved the way for this young Cambodian band to come to Germany. Music and particularly metal is an international language that connects people across all borders, cultures, and religions in friendship."

The band adds:-

"Last year's problems with our visa unfortunately made it impossible for us to come to Germany", Doch Chkae relate happily. "We are all the more pleased to have been invited again and to get the chance to play at the world's biggest metal festival! This is our biggest dream coming true! We are totally thrilled! Thank you, Wacken! Thank you, Germany!"

Picture

Doch Chkae translates as "dog life" – in which many of the inhabitants of the big slums in Cambodia are trapped. The three band members grew up in what was once the country's biggest waste dump. According to UNICEF, more than 10,000 children live on and off the streets in Cambodia's capital Phnom Penh alone. The kids catch dogs for restaurants, prostitute themselves, trade in drugs, look for recyclables in garbage or try to survive in other ways.

Theara, Vichey, Pic, and Hing were lucky - three of the homeless kids were not only lodged in an orphanage run by Moms Against Poverty, but their social worker Timon also happened to find the right valve for the angry teenagers: Heavy Metal. After visiting a concert of the deathcore act SLITEN6IX, the original trio quickly formed their own band. Doch Chkae play angry death metal – and are probably the first to use their native language Khmer.

Doch Chkae have become a role model that has long been encouraging other children and young people in Cambodia to use music as a means to gain some control over their lives. The band plays concerts for their community, has founded its own label, and even appeared on television.

Before their show at the Wacken Open Air, DOCH CHKAE will be joined by Lebanese girl band SLAVE TO SIRENS, TRAINWRECK from Bangladesh, and VALLEY OF CHROME from the Philippines to play a warm-up gig at Hamburg's Kaiserkeller under the banner of "United Metal Nations" on July 27th.

Bangladeshi death metal power trio Nekrohowl unleashed their debut EP "Epitome of Morbid" at their EP launching gig. Offering an hour long set-list, the band has announced their final gig of the year 2017.

Decibel Magazine exclusively Streamed the entire EP along with an interview, which can be found at this location.

“On their debut EP, Epitome of Morbid, Nekrohowl unleash four songs (plus an intro) of filthy death metal rife with technical riffs, pounding rhythm section and cavernous vocals” —Decibel Magazine.

The Band Comments: "The whole EP is written based on the concept of personifying 'death' as a supreme entity with sheer omnipotence and ominous rage against all mortals. It is believed that death is inevitable, divine and the only truth to be embraced."

Originally started as a death metal quartet in the crypt of Dhaka, Bangladesh, Nekrohowl was formed a year ago by the members of acclaimed local acts like Abominable Carnivore, Dissector, Enmachined and Homicide. A death evoking, rotten sounding rehearsal demo was soon manifested, which was followed by an oversea live annihilation on the other side of the Bengal — Kolkata, India. With the vilest form of sound and high-powered live performances, they have marked their place as a formidable force in the realm of South Asian extreme metal music.

Earlier in the year, the band encountered with line-up issues, when the vocalist and drummer had to left the band, but that did not stop Nekrohowl from blazing fiercely; Warmonger (Warhound, Ex: Orator) as a replacement in the position of drum-hammering and Obliterator taking over the charge of vocal duty turned them as a power trio, and this incident marks a significant step forward for the band. Climbing to the peak of their powers with this monstrous line-up, the bestial trio embarked on a mini-tour, named as “Agonize and Excruciate Tour 2017”, to support Japanese death metal maestro Desecravity at their Dhaka, Kolkata and Shilong live dates.

Debut EP “Epitome of Morbid” is undeniably the most anticipating metal release of 2017 from the country. With 05 tracks (including an intro), clocking in at around 20 minutes, the EP incorporates the captivating intricacy of Suffocation, sheer gruesomeness of Autopsy, belligerent tone of Immolation, vitriolic intensity of Morbid Angel, demon invoking power of Hellhammer, and malefic darkness of Dead Congregation. The song structures clearly demonstrate the members’ sole object of the exercise, and it is nothing but to play the hard-hearted form of death metal music. Whereas many contemporary old school rooted extreme metal bands from the subcontinent fail to sustain the primitive atmosphere because of the production, Nekrohowl has cautiously maintained that dark, rotten vibe of old school death metal within these tracks.

Limited number of copies of the EP were released locally in digipak format, which will be followed by cassette issue from Malaysian label Diabolicurst Productions, and cd, cassette and vinyl release from American label Slaugherhouse Records. An EP launching gig took place in Dhaka during the local digipak release date on 30th September, 2017.

Nekrohowl plays abhorrent and paroxysmal form of death metal in the uncanniest path of legendary 90's era death metal period. The troop consists of the members from some of the finest bands from Bangladesh, including Homicide, Nafarmaan, Enmachined and Warhound.

Toilet Ov Hell premiered "Mortal Incubation"  — first single from their debut upcoming EP, "Epitome of Morbid". The track can be streamed at this location.

Nekrohowl originally started as a 4-piece Death Metal band, consisting of members of some other prestigious local extreme metal band. Soon they released their menacing demo and invaded Kolkata. Currently they are active as a trio and their monstrous line-up consists of Obliterator (Homicide), Sadist (Enmachined, Nafarmaan) and Warmonger (Warhound, Ex-Orator).

Track "Mortal Incubation" will be a part of their upcoming EP, to be released within a few months.

Guitarist Obliterator States:

"The song resembles "death" as a person / entity with sheer omnipotence and ominous wrath against mortals. It is said that , the bringer of doom and darkness shall forever reign in the realm of man. The temptation to devastate human in flesh will summon ultimate excruciating."
