True devotees have always been excited by the band’s willingness to be diverse; “At War With Reality” continues that tradition after 19 years of anticipation. Ensiferum have been locked away at the Astia Studio in Lappeenranta, Finland with producer Anssi Kippo for three weeks. Drums, bass, and most of the guitar parts have been recorded. At the end of last week, guest musician Timo Väänänen tracked some takes with his kantele, and over the weekend, vocalist Petri Lindroos began tracking vocals! Bassist Sami Hinkka has this message for their fans: "Hi folks! For the last few days, Mahi and Pete have sweated their asses off whilst recording guitars. Songs sound, like our friends in UK would say, bloody awesome! Today (Friday, September 26th) we recorded kantele and some special guitar tracks. Tomorrow it's time to set up a microphone and start recording the vocals. Things are proceeding as planned." The album is tentatively scheduled for release worldwide on Metal Blade Records in early 2015. http://www.ensiferum.com http://twitter.com/EnsiferumMetal http://www.facebook.com/Ensiferum Multi-media artist Nader Sadek's new four-song EP "The Malefic: Chapter III" will be released as a free CD insert this November and December via Decibel Magazine (#122), Terrorizer Magazine in the UK (#254) and Legacy Magazine in Germany (#94). The Decibel release has a different mix and master from the UK and German versions. The album will also be released digitally in December. Track List: 1. Deformation by Incision 2. Carrion Whispers 3. Entropy Eternal 4. Decent Returning to the fold are main songwriters Flo Mounier of Cryptopsy, master composer and guitarist Rune Eriksen of Aura Noir and multi-voiced growler Travis Ryan of Cattle Decapitation. Bobby Koelble, whose jazz-influenced technique mixed with tinges of Eastern passion, brings a fresh flare into the sound. Depending mostly on what sounds like millions of notes being touched at sensational speed, Koelble is best known for his work with genre creating band Death, as he collaborated in creating their most revered record, "Symbolic". Lastly, the solos of Brazilian guitarist Andreas Kisser from yet another genre defining band, Sepultura bring an emotion that is both chaotic and yet full of feeling, and whose whammy-bar twisting and dragged notes introduce a wicked counterpoint to Koelble's style. Shimmering on the surface are the angelic sirens of Carmen Simoes formerly of the Ava Inferi and current Moonspell backing vocalist, who conjures a sense of depth to the song "Descent". Musically, the EP runs through a variety of emotions and styles, resulting in a schizophrenic sound that nonetheless yields a tight, cacophonous, and nightmarish unit, serving the album's concept of a man's struggle with the self-defeating consequences of his own decisions. It can be said that each track leans towards a different sub-genre of extreme metal, starting with mid 90's style Death metal, coursing through Black metal, going back to late '80s era Death metal and finally concluding with a Doom metal track. However, the general feel of the EP is an undeniably intense Death metal vibe. The album concept conjures an unknown time and place from which God has withdrawn, and even his arch-nemesis has resigned from his post due to inactivity, stranding all souls in Limbo. In order to rescue his loved ones, and all the souls of humankind, from this afterlife, a nameless protagonist journeys to the sacred mountain of the divine. Convinced by the righteousness of his mission, he believes that his enthronement on the divine mountain will release all souls to eternal bliss. Yet blinded by his own arrogance, he realizes only too late that he has reactivated and occupied the throne of the devil, condemning all souls, even those of his family, to an eternal inferno. Chapter III signifies the final act and conclusion of the story, which is set to be re-released as a graphic novel in the future along with Chapters I & II The fantastical imagery and vocabulary of "The Malefic: Chapter III" conceals a combative political allegory in that the journey of the nameless protagonist replays the journey of most politicians. Seeking power to serve righteous ends, their arrogance and access to the corridors of power corrupts them until they pursue personal gain above all else, even to the point of destroying the very things they originally desired to save. Other important production choices amplify this wide-ranging sonic palette. For example, almost each song uses a different bass player. As artist / lyricist / producer Sadek notes:- "While the composition of a song is the most important part of its architecture and aesthetic success, I believe that bass is the agent that congeals all the instruments, giving it backbone and weight. That's why I have chosen some of the hardest working and original bassists who I personally find to be the most important members in their respective and former bands." These include the prodigy, newcomer to the project and permanent bassist Martin Rygiel, formerly of Decapitated, who also mixed and mastered the EP, plays a highly controlled yet grinding low end frequency; and guests Cannibal Corpse chief-songwriter Alex Webster, adds his signature sound of truly sickening rhythms to the song "Deformation by Incision"; while the young Olivier Pinard, formerly of Neuraxis and currently touring bassist for Cryptopsy, brings a dark and foreboding vibe to "Carrion Whispers". Adds Flo added that:- "Rune, Nader and I really wanted to create something unique with this release. Our styles adapted to form this new direction and sound that was only touched upon for "In This Flesh". We've grown to have total confidence in each others musical and creative abilities which allows us to try anything we want. I think it was our differences that made this what it has become. And all the rest of the unique talents on this release and you pretty much have a global effort like none other! The perfect elements and chemistry to create the hybrid which is The Malefic: Chapter III." While Sadek is well-known for curating this musical collective and hand-drawing all the artwork, for this EP he has also written all the lyrics and composed most of the vocal phrasings delivered by Ryan. www.nadersadek.com www.facebook.com/naderflesh Fresh-faced Devilment, fronted by veteran Black / Dark Metal vocalist Dani Filth (Cradle of Filth), took time out to record a music video for their forthcoming second single ''Even Your Blood Group Rejects Me', taken from the band's forthcoming debut "The Great And Secret Show". The video stills can be seen above. Director Sam Scott-Hunter offered his thoughts on the new video, admitting that he "wanted to capture the intensity of the song, and then shove it in your face to get the heart pounding - the visual equivalent of listening to it loud on your headphones in a dark room". In order to do this the band and Sam headed to Suffolk, locked themselves in and had fun with both the lights and volume. Ultimately he wanted to combine the darkness and sound together, so that whilst the brutality and visual-representation was present, he wanted an element of "mystery and mysticism in what the band are doing, and to capture that we enlisted an incredible dancer, NagaSita, who has a wonderfully different and exotic take on the track". Similarly, Dani Filth had the same vision and acknowledged that they wanted to "create something very visually disturbing, yet stunning to look at, in a minimalistic monochrome context", bringing out phantasmagorical images via the usage of strobe-effects, fire, smoke, exotic dancing, silhouettes and Theban masks. He feels that both Sam and his assistant for the day, Devilment photographer Dex Jezierski (formerly of Echoes Fall and Thames Burial), locked forces to conjure up a video of horrid artistic proportions. Moreover he admits that "we even enlisted the help of my wife Toni and daughter Luna for hair, angle-grinding, make-up and costume, all for the benefit of keeping our cinematic occult activities a closed secret from the unsuspecting human world" "The Great And Secret Show" has a scheduled release date of November 3rd via Nuclear Blast. Now they offer their teaser video for fans, covering all aspects of the forthcoming album, click here to watch it Speaking about the new album, keyboardist Dries Gaerdelen admits that it "differs quite a bit from our two previous albums" in as far as they "wanted the new songs to be more guitar oriented and more edgy, so we worked on the songs in a different way than we used to". He goes on to add that their guitarists "Reinier Schenk and Jonathan Vanderwal started writing the songs from a guitar perspective adding the keyboards and drums later on. On our two previous albums ‘Ritu’ and ‘Irreversible Decay’ the songs were created the other way around.” Furthermore he admits that the band's "new drummer Kevin De Leener had a big impact on the creation of this album, as his input from a drummers perspective was higher than we're used to. These factors, songs being based on drums and guitars, form a solid base for haunting melodic black metal songs". Saille vocalist Dennie Grondelaers was sole writer for all of the lyrics on the forthcoming album, this time they focus on the topics of horror literature from the turn-of-the-20th century and modern era, additionally they accidentally introduced a Lovecraft based album, although unintended it is "noticeable throughout the whole record, and can't be ignored. Even stronger, the source of every song, except for ‘Walpurgis’ (based on Goethe's Faust), can be considered as proto-, post- or pure Lovecraftian" With respect to the limited digipak edition of the album, Saille went for gold and contacted " all currently living writers (or their heirs) of the books we based our lyrics upon", this lead to them gaining permission from writers such as Stephen King, thus allowing them to use any quote they wished from any of the books, the quotes that Dries are talking of "will be displayed next to our lyrics for our fans to compare / embrace" Colin Marks, designer of the forthcoming album's artwork was giving his commandments on what the band wanted, but when this was done he was free to add in anything to the artwork itself. He goes further into depth by saying that “The band requested something quite dark, with hints of horror, so I wanted to give the image a fairly vast and ominous atmosphere. An initial suggestion referred to certain lyrical themes of an ancient library of sorts and / or occult characters, so I took this as a good starting point and constructed this huge dark old structure built into a large cave-like rock formation. It was important to keep the tone dark and mysterious, with a tiny barely noticeable figure within the entrance, which people can read into however they wish. The additional artwork in the layout ties in with the cover concept and further explores the surroundings. I wanted it to represent not only the music, but also the bands various influences, and hopefully we've achieved that quite accurately." Saille Website
Exodus are proud to announce the special guests appearing on their latest showcase ‘Blood In, Blood Out’, the band’s tenth studio album due out on October 13th. The guests are Kirk Hammett (Metallica), Chuck Billy (Testament), and Dan the Automator (Gorillaz, Mike Patton / Lovage, Deltron 3030) Crafting an industrial sound bed on the intro to the album opener ‘Black 13’ is electronic music producer Dan the Automator. Exodus guitarist and songwriter Gary Holts admits that they: "ran into each other a couple times, I knew what I wanted to hear and I knew he could do it, and could do it that day. So we sent him a file with the drums and guitars we already had there and just told him to go crazy with it.” Chuck Billy lends his signature roar to the track ‘BTK’, one of the first songs recorded by returning vocalist Steve “Zetro” Souza, who recently admitted that: “Chuck and I have known each other forever. We work really well together, we know each other really well. So if I’m doing my vocals and he’s there, I can trust him to go ‘No way Zet, doesn’t sound good like that. Do it like this’, or ‘Yeah that’s killer’. If he says it sounds killer, I know it is.” Original band guitarist Kirk Hammett (Metallica) contributed a solo to ‘Salt The Wound’. Holt adds that: “This was actually the first time Kirk got to play on an official Exodus release, he did the early demo, and then joined Metallica and didn’t do anything with us after that. So he was totally gung-ho about it. He came down and ripped out a bunch of takes and we picked the best one and then had a barbecue and drank beer.” Pre-order this exclusive CD / DVD or Vinyl bundle at Recordstore.co.uk to have your name printed on the poster alongside other fan's names! Now they're working on the cover artwork and as soon as it's done, it will be revealed along with an advance song and full track listing. The album, "Return to Pangea", was recorded with Miguel A. Riutort "Mega", who also worked with Trallery on their debut album. Since the release of Breathless' debut album "Thrashumancy" in early 2011 also through Xtreem Music, they have been playing shows all around Spain during 2011 & 2012 and it was in October of that year when bass player Javi departed them, and since it wasn't easy to find a replacement where they live (Mallorca), they decided that Oscar "Nazareno" would switch from guitar to bass and keep it as a trio. There's no exact release date for "Return to Pangea", but it's expected to drop before the end of the year. www.facebook.com/breathless.thrashattack Readers can listen to their debut album in full (and buy it digital) right here Deadlock's founding member Tobias Graf has sadly passed away aged 35.
