The Tolis brothers (Rotting Christ) are honoured with new species being named after them

Metal veteran brothers Sakis and Themis Tolis of the Greek metal band Rotting Christ have reached immortality by having a fossil named after them! Two researchers from the Natural History Museum in Luxembourg recently found a new brittle-star species and decided to name it 'Brezinacantha Tolis' honouring the Tolis brothers.

Frontman Sakis Tolis comments:-

"This is one of the greatest honoors I have received as an individual and musician and it gives me power to keep on creating and offer these wild times."

Dr. Ben Thuy and and Dr. Lea Numberger (research associates at the Natural History Museum Luxembourg) comment on the naming:

"When we first saw the fossil brittle star, we immediately knew it was something exciting. It turned out to be a species new to science, and so we had the privilege to name it. With the choice of the name, we wanted to combine our joint passions for science and music, and decided to honour one of our favourite bands. The new fossil belongs to an animal that lived in a dark, toxic environment in the depths of an ancient ocean, dwelling on the  remains of their dead predecessors. This is pure black metal! Naming this species after Sakis and Themis Tolis is our way to issue an academic recognition of their talent and hard work. Now they own a small piece of immortality, because scientific species names are for eternity."

More info on the discovery and naming of 'Brezninacantha Tolis' can be found HERE.

It’s been a tough time in recent months but Greek modern metal group Simplefast have kept themselves busy backing up the release of their latest album Eternal (Sliptrick Records – February 21st, 2020) with two video releases. First up was the official video for the dynamic track The Liar’s Truth and this was quickly followed by the excellent lyrics video for Nero Reborn. Check both videos out below.

The 8 tracks which make up Eternal are ideal for heavy metal and thrash metal listeners, moreover they combine elements for a more modern metal sound. These are characterized by melodic and growly vocals with groovy drums and bass and a guitar duo, with smashing riffs, sharp solos and melodies filling the space. In their humble opinion, Simplefast consider the album, the “Magnum Opus” of the band. Read more …here

Available now from: Shop Sliptrick | Apple Music | Spotify | & other major stores

Simplefast are:

Yiannis Voulgaropoulos – Vocals
Hector Stavrakas – Rhythm Guitar/Backing Vocals

Greek Psychedelic Progressive Metallers Hail Spirit Noir premiere new song 'The First Ape On New Earth'

22/4/2020

Picture

Greek Psychedelic / Progressive Metallers Hail Spirit Noir unveil the first single, "The First Ape On New Earth", from their forthcoming studio album, "Eden In Reverse". The release is slated for June 19th on Agonia Records.

Listen to the new song, at: https://youtu.be/6kf--_8d0ko

The band had this to say on the new album:-

"This is the album we've spent the most time on. We started off doing some experiments without any idea where they could lead to. After the first 3-4 tracks, we realized we were onto something new for the band. We were no longer in the 60s-70s zone but more in the 70s-80s. The songs sounded retro-futuristic and surreal but they were also more prog, psychedelic and challenging than ever. In the lyrics, we re-wrote the story of Eden from a surreal, Richard Dawkins-esque, Darwinian point of view. The result was Eden in Reverse".

Hail Spirit Noir is an intriguing psychedelic prog metal band, with strong experimental and prog rock influences, recommended for fans of Oranssi Pazuzu, Ulver, Borknagar, or Ghost, yet with an identity of its own. Their third and last album, "Mayhem In Blue", was released to critical acclaim in 2016, and was followed by several festival appearances, including a thundering performance at Roadburn (which simultaneously marked the first-ever appearance of a Greek band at the festival) and other festivals such as Inferno (Norway), Dark Bombastic Evening (Romania) and more.

The group was established late 2010 as a trio and issued their debut album "Pneuma" two years later. Its warm reception strengthened the band's experimental approach and enhanced its quirky take on music, all of which inevitably led to the release of "Oi Magoi" in 2014; a psychedelic prog-black metal opus of trippy melodies and satyric aura. Followed by "Mayhem In Blue" in 2016, the band's signature sound was solidified, and at the same time expanded into more aggressive territories, without abandoning the group's trademark psychedelic-infused melodies. Since 2018, the trio has been joined full-time by its live members, changing the band into a sextet. The new album "Eden In Reverse" was completed late 2019. It is regarded by Hail Spirit Noir as the next step in their ongoing evolution, this time with an 80s twist.

Greek Death Metal veterans Death Courier return with a new album

16/3/2020

Picture

Death metal band Death Courier are back with what's arguably the strongest album of their illustrious career. They've been around since 1987 but have managed to make sure that their music sounds remarkably fresh and exciting. You can stream one of the vicious tracks on YouTube and Bandcamp, and keep an eye out for the full length promo coming your way.

Legendary death metal band Death Courier are one of the earliest bands from the Greek metal scene releasing a slew of demos from way back in 1987 and putting out an album and an EP in the early '90s. More than three decades later, the band is on the verge of releasing one of the strongest albums to come from the Greek death metal scene. It's hard to believe that this is the same band because the energy level is off the charts and everything has been amped up to match present day standards without of course changing the core sound and integrity. The music is still essentially the pulsating, rabid death/thrash metal kind and there remains that palpable hunger in the members to create memorable and gnarly music that they were known for. This is a lethal new album that throws down the gauntlet to the naysayers doubting the band's prowess after so many years, who will invariably be forced to eat their words. 'Necrotic Verses' will grab you by the throat and won't let go till the shockingly potent album is over. Death Courier have set new standards for themselves and others to look up to, all over again.

Greek Black Metallers Kawir stream new album via "Decibel" magazine's website

7/1/2020

Picture

Greek black metal legends Kawir stream the entirety of their highly anticipated eighth album, Adrasteia, at Decibel magazine's website. Set for international release on January 10th via Iron Bonehead Productions, hear Kawir's Adrasteia in its entirety exclusively HERE.

For over 25 years now, Kawir have been one of the unsung pillars of the classic Greek black metal sound. While the names Rotting Christ, Varathron, and Necromantia are incredibly important to that style's foundation, it was Kawir who kept the faith during the '90s and into the new millennium. In 1994, the then-young band released two pivotal 7"s, Eumenides and a split with Japan's Sigh - on the pivotal Cacophonous Records, no less - and then followed those up in 1996 with the To Cavirs MLP, which is the first truly pagan-oriented record to hail from the Greek black metal scene. With that mini-album, Kawir set about on a Hellenistic crusade to celebrate their native gods and mythology in their lyrics and sartorial presentation. From the late '90s onward, the band continued to remain prolific, perpetually committed to fine-tuning their idiosyncratic craft, culminating in underground classics Arai (2005) and Ophiolatreia (2008). Although 2012's Ισόθεος featured a cross-continental line-up, the album further solidified Kawir's status as unique icons in the black metal underground.

Come 2016, however, Kawir aligned with long-time fans Iron Bonehead and released their first album through the label, the massively acclaimed Father Sun Mother Moon. That album saw Kawir return to an all-Greek line-up and recast their classic sound in a whole new light, and continued that forward momentum the next year with the fiery Exilasmos. If the 64-minute Father Sun Mother Moon was the sound of Kawir indulging their most epic expanses - always with power and poignancy, it must be said - then the 42-minute Exilasmos was its punchier and more restless counterpart. Taken together, both these albums for Iron Bonehead formed an exciting new chapter in the ongoing Kawir saga, and suitably saw the band reach a whole new generation of fans, their fire seemingly inexhaustible and a veritable fountain of youth.

Picture

2. Atalanti
3. Danaides
4. Limniades
5. Colchis
6. Medea

Perhaps not surprisingly, that fountain overfloweth with Kawir's eighth album, Adrasteia. Although three years separate this and its full-length predecessor, Adrasteia amazingly brims with an urgency that's simply startling for a band of such veteran status. Upon its first few resounding notes, Adrasteia is immediately and engagingly Kawir - and as the ceremonial slow-burn of opening track "Tydeus" builds, anticipation is set exceedingly high, these Greeks working a simmering spell of sumptuous splendour. The track segues into a heroic march by its latter third, with that ever-so-enticing Hellenic mysticism taking root, before the fury fully begins with the following "Atalanti." Indeed, that fury doesn't relent for the remainder of Adrasteia, but Kawir carefully keep their pacing nuanced and dynamic, with each of these six characteristically cascading tracks unveiling a breathtaking landscape of sonic peaks and valleys.

But, as ever with Kawir, the sonic portrait they paint is imbued with a deep lyricism hailing the Greek pantheon. In the case of Adrasteia, its namesake is the goddess of female revenge, and honourably does the album's lyrical concept focus on heroic women and the cruelty around them. For this unique and tasteful exploration, Kawir here have gathered together a whole host of incredible guests, including Macabre Omen main-man Alexandros on all clean vocals, the ethereal Norwegian voice of Lindy-Fay Hella on the stark 'n' haunting "Colchis," and Melechesh's Ashmedi giving a guitar solo on "Danaides."

Altogether, Adrasteia makes for Kawir's most quintessentially Greek album in many years - ever longer may their pantheon reign! Fully experience that reign exclusively HERE.
